Thaal Sinestro of the planet Korugar in Sector is an intergalactic super-villain and antagonist of Green Lantern , particularly Hal Jordan. Originally known as the greatest member of the Green Lantern Corps ever to wield a ring , he trained many students including Hal Jordan. The Guardians of the Universe exiled him to the Antimatter Universe after learning he had used his power to set up a dictatorship. Having fought the Green Lanterns for many years with a yellow ring forged by the Weaponers of Qward , he established his own Sinestro Corps to spread fear throughout the universe. After years of battling it out with any number of Green Lanterns and DC Comics superheroes alike, Sinestro eventually found himself in the Antimatter Universe, a dimension that he had visited before to craft his original fear-based ring of choice more on that later. While there, Sinestro strikes up a bargain with the ruler of that domain, the all-powerful evil that is the Anti-Monitor. Committed to spreading fear across the galaxy, the pact between the two gives rise to an army who seize Qward, the antimatter version of the Green Lantern home of Oa, and enslave the populace known as the Weaponers of Qward , forcing them to make yellow rings on a near constant basis. After being trained and reconditioned with the help of the hulking alien drill sergeant Arkillo , the Sinestro Corps are ready to fan the flames of war, and take the Green Lantern Corps down once and for all.

So what turned him from a hero into a villain? Born on the planet Korugar, Sinestro was originally an anthropologist who studied ancient ruins, but that all changed when a Green Lantern called Prohl Gosgotha crashed at one of his sites. The gravely injured Lantern loaned his ring to Sinestro in time for him to fend off his pursuers, giving him a taste of the ring's power. Despite the underhanded methods Sinestro used to become a Green Lantern, he proved to be a valuable asset to the corps. In his prime, Sinestro's fearless nature, strong will, and determination made him one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time, and the lack of crime and disorder in his sector served as proof. After Abin died and passed his ring to Hal, Sinestro served as his mentor. The two became good friends, but as we all know, their friendship wouldn't last. He began to employ more drastic, oppressive policing methods to quell the chaos before it began, not realizing that it was his use of such methods that would bring the prophecy to fruition.

He escapes with a power ring hidden in his boot. When Parallax gained control of Hal Jordan and turned him insane, Sinestro knew that his time was near.
