Along with Lucas and Sami , the popular couple has been lauded by critics and fans as one of the soap's next supercouples. They are often referred to as the portmanteau "Shelle" for Sh awn and B elle by fans on internet message boards and in magazines. Shawn and Belle have a daughter, Claire Brady. The long time friends experienced a high school relationship, with romantic dates and school dances, and quickly fell in love. Unfortunately, the young couple was separated when Shawn claimed to have fathered classmate Jan Spears ' baby, actually conceived by a rape while on a school trip to Puerto Rico. He was kidnapped by Stefano, as part of the lengthy DiMera-Brady feud, but escaped without great difficult. He achieved this feat once again after he was sent off to boarding school. The sense of adversity went a long way in shaping his rebellious attitude and helped him develop an even handed relationship with his father when they sought to track down his real mother. Entering into high school, Shawn found himself consistently challenged by two people: Belle and Philip. As the two boys vied for her affections, they also began to vie for the affections of her friend Chloe. Although Shawn ended up winning Belle over, it was not to last. During a trip to Puerto Rico, Shawn became caught up in the search for Alice's missing ruby and, in the process, ended up involved with the highly troubled Jan Spears. She told him that she had been raped on the island and left pregnant with venereal disease. She begged him to pretend to be the father of the child to spare her the humiliation of the truth.

An Irish immigrant, Shawn moved to Salem from his native Galway at an undetermined time. In the early stages of the "Brady-DiMera Feud Resolution" storyline in the earlys, it was revealed that Shawn had maintained sporadic contact with family and friends in Ireland throughout the years. Including the "rougher" element of their hometown, who regard Shawn with a great degree of respect and refer to him only as, "Himself" and who Shawn directed to "rough up" and detain Bo Brady when he was getting a little too curious about past events in Ireland. There were strong hints that Shawn may have had some underworld dealings of his own in his youth, and was possibly involved directly in some of the early battles of the feud with the DiMera family, but this was later dropped. In the s, Shawn was shocked to learn that Greek tycoon Victor Kiriakis was the father of his and Caroline's youngest child, Bo, the product of an affair that Caroline had with Victor years earlier. Over the years, Shawn has kept himself busy in a number of ways. Originally the owner of the Brady Fish Market, after their business was destroyed and Shawn suffered a massive heart attack, he and Caroline re-opened the Fish Market as the Brady Pub, often employing many of their family and friends. Over the years the pub has functioned as a second home for some of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their first great-grandson, Will, spent a great deal of time there while he was growing up. He had no recollection of Jan's deception and believed her to be his girlfriend, but he remembered the videos of Belle and Philip and believed that Belle had moved on. Once Philip, a Marine , was sent to the war in Iraq , Shawn and Belle realized they still loved each other and planned to tell Philip the truth. They were pursued by Philip at every corner. She was returned to Belle a few hours later unharmed. When Shawn was back to his senses, it was too late for him to stop Belle from marrying Philip. Luckily for Shawn and Belle, despite their problems, they were always able to find their way back to each other. Instead of ending the pregnancy as she said she would, she kept the baby and extorted money from Bonnie Lockhart until she couldn't do so any longer.
