But unlike their predecessors from the 60s and 70s, the SKX and divers weren't famous for their handsome good looks although they had it in plenty , which left a lot of them to the creativity of modifiers or modders , especially the Seiko models. A quick search on the net will net you har har a plethora of non-original examples of the Seiko watches. The extent of modding can vary - from a simple bezel change to an all out homage for something else that's famous. Which makes buying an all-original parts-wise at least that much harder. In my journey as a collector I've only come across a small sampling of originals, and I'm happy to say that I have bought them all. While this won't be a comprehensive take on the history and different variations of the popular entry-level vintage diver and its technical differences there's a pretty good article here , it's rather a quick go-to guide if you're looking at one and need something to go by. Nonetheless, never underestimate the power of a detailed research before you make a decision.

If you are a long time reader of this blog then you may recall a post made in December of regarding a similar watch which I restored for my father. I actually had set out to do two watches- one for my dad and the other for my elder brother with the intention of having both ready by Christmas Eve. What you see is what you get and although the pieces will be well worn there are not a whole lot of unexpected surprises inside. When I finally found the piece I was looking for it was in India and that alone should give you pause. I know now that they are better ways to grab JDM watches but at the time I was under the gun and eBay was my go-to solution. India is not the best place to find vintage watches for restoration. Not a good sign.
