Thomas Grant Gustin born January 14, is an American actor and singer. Trained in musical theater, his first major credit was as part of the national tour of West Side Story ; he will return to theater in the original Broadway production of Water for Elephants , originating the starring role of Jacob Jankowski. He is the son of Tina Haney, a pediatric nurse, and Thomas Gustin, a college professor. He also went to Hurrah Players Incorporated which is a theater organization in Virginia. Sebastian Smythe is an openly gay recurring character on Glee during the third , fourth and fifth seasons. He is the former lead singer of the Dalton Academy Warblers, is originally portrayed as the show's main villain in his introduction at the beginning of Season Three. He is captain of the Warblers during the third season, and for much of it leads them in a personal vendetta against the New Directions. In Season Four , he is demoted from his position, being replaced by Hunter Clarington. After Hunter is forced to step down due to drug scandals, Sebastian is reinstated, and remains in the position. He is last seen helping Blaine propose to Kurt in Love, Love, Love and graduated off-screen after these events. Since his first appearance in Season 3, he is mostly mentioned by Kurt Hummel , verbally or in his head. Upon seeing Blaine , Sebastian takes immediate interest and takes his hand to join him in the song showing his confident nature. Blaine invites Sebastian as well as the rest of the Warblers to their opening night of West Side Story. Immediately following the song, the two are shown speaking at a table in what is assumed to be Dalton's cafe. Sebastian shamelessly flirts with Blaine and indicates that Blaine was a "legend" amongst the students at Dalton and says Blaine is "sex on a stick and sings like a dream," and asks why Blaine transferred. While obviously the main cast are the best, there are a number of secondary characters that appear as the series goes on, both men and women who are in their own ways as fascinating, complex and, yes, infuriating, as their primary counterparts. His efforts fail, of course, his deviousness and cunning makes him a compelling character to watch, even as the series clearly wants the viewer to strenuously dislike him. Of all of the characters that have appeared on this show, Blaine is one of the best. Coach Beiste is one of the better adult characters, in part because his storyline is so compelling and heartwarming, particularly his coming out as trans and his subsequent transitioning. Jonathan Groff is another of those actors who just seems to have more charm than any one person should possess , and he brings all of that to bear in the character of Jesse St. It was probably inevitable that theater giant Idina Menzel would appear in this show, especially considering the way that she looks quite a lot like Rachel. Given that the main characters introduced in the first season were fated to eventually graduate, it made sense that the show would have to start adding in new characters, and one of the better additions was Sam.
