Fugaku was fascinated at how prodigious Itachi was and ended up paying far more attention to him than Sasuke. His later falling out with Itachi eventually led to him focusing more on Sasuke, whom he also praised for his abilities, but Fugaku was a very serious man who did not make his love for his son apparent, and this led to Sasuke craving his attention.
