She lives in space with her adopted children, the Lumas, and travels the universe on the Comet Observatory. Rosalina is a woman with great power, whose sole duty is to watch over and guard the universe, the Mushroom World and protect the Lumas. Rosalina's backstory is described in her storybook , which is found in the Comet Observatory's Library in Super Mario Galaxy , telling her past of her time living on Earth and how she met the Lumas. She is currently voiced by Laura Faye Smith. Rosalina is a tall woman with fair skin and cyan-colored eyes, with only her left eye visible from a directly frontal view as her particularly large bang of her hair covers her right eye.

Rosalina is a character who makes her debut in Super Mario Galaxy. She is a very powerful figure, as her duty is to watch over and protect the cosmos, while also serving as the adopted mother of the Lumas and commanding the Comet Observatory. Rosalina's backstory is chronicled in her storybook told by her in the Comet Observatory's Library in Super Mario Galaxy. Nine chapters are unlocked throughout the game, and the last is unlocked by completing the game. Rosalina's story begins when she meets a young Luma in a rusted spaceship, where they rebuild the spaceship to go search for the Luma's mother. They traverse through space, encountering comets, asteroids, and Star Bits. Rosalina then starts to miss her own mother, but the two begin to build a new home that would eventually become the Comet Observatory. As she and the Luma build the home, Rosalina takes more Lumas under her wing. After they see their th comet, Rosalina looks back at her home planet, which causes her to feel greatly upset and homesick, and then comes to terms with the fact that her own mother is dead. The young Luma who traversed with Rosalina tells her that her mother is always part of her, and then transforms into a comet that can traverse to Rosalina's home planet. Rosalina then declares that the Lumas are her family now, and declares they will visit her home planet once every years. If the player collects all Power Stars, Rosalina thanks the player, and tells them that she watches over them from beyond the stars.

In golf, her default drive is yards, and her shots travel very high in a fade trajectory.

She is the motherly, gentle and very beautiful protector of the Luma creatures. Rosalina's attire resembles Peach's, though both are different. She wears a silver crown which resembles Peach's, though Peach has a golden crown. She also has a yellow star brooch at the top of her pale turquoise dress, purple nail-polish, and silver heels. The end of her sleeves are powder-blue, and her hair is shiny pale-cinnamon blonde, which is even more lighter blond than Peach's yellow blonde hair. Rosalina's eyes are cyan-blue, but her right eye cannot be seen as it's covered in her hair. She wears big golden earring which resembles a cross x.
