I know several posters have taken both Rick Steves tours and Road Scholar tours. I'm curious about your opinions and comparisons. Thanks for your opinions! I reentered it with the same bad results. Pam and Valerie Pacific Northwest have taken multiple Road Scholar tours and with the exception of one Pam did, they both like the company and their tours. They convinced me. We are signed up for our first Road Scholar tour in January of Best Of Central Mexico. I say, go for it! I prefer Road Scholar although I like both companies. Here are my general thoughts, as I have not done either of the tours you ask about. Road Scholar is an American not-for-profit organization that provides educational travel programs primarily geared toward older adults. The organization is headquartered in Boston , Massachusetts. From its founding in until , Road Scholar was known as Elderhostel. Road Scholar offers study tours throughout the United States and Canada and in approximately other countries. Elderhostel was founded in by friends Marty Knowlton , social activist and self-described hippie , and David Bianco , director of residential life at the University of New Hampshire. Knowlton rejected ageism the belief that one's mind must fail as one age. After four years of backpacking through Europe and staying in hostels , Knowlton, then in his 50s, returned to the United States to direct the youth hostel program at the University of New Hampshire. There, he and Bianco, the university administrator, decided that society needed "elder hostels" in addition to youth hostels. The program started in the summer of , offering older adults noncredit classes and dormitory housing on campuses in New England [3] —a sort of " summer school for retired people.
