Photo Review. Autofocusing is supported in Movie mode and the Guide mode settings from the D have been ported into the new model and enhanced with extra functions, review nikon d3100. The Nikon D pushes reds, blues and some greens a bit, but actually slightly undersaturates bright yellow and some cyans. Overall saturation levels are quite good, and less saturated than the previous D model which was a little over-the-top in our opinion. The D's fine-grained saturation adjustment see below also makes it easy to customize its color to match your personal preference. Most consumer digital cameras produce color that's more highly saturated more intense than found in the original subjects. This is simply because most people like their color a bit brighter than life.

Nikon D Until I sat down to actually write this review, it hadn't struck me how confusing the market placement of the Nikon D is. It's priced the same as the still-available D, which is in many ways a better camera. And with the exception of video, which many users don't care about anyway, it's very similar to the much cheaper D So while the D isn't a bad camera, and for the most part holds its own against competitors from other manufacturers, it still pales in comparison with its own line mates. The D has a very good noise profile; it matches and perhaps bests the current leader in the budget dSLR category, the Pentax K-x. The camera delivers excellent color reproduction in its default SD mode as well--a nice change from some overly saturation-pushing competitors like Pentax and Sony--and its metering and exposure system work reliably and well. Sharpness is, of course, lens dependent, but I was pretty happy with the various models I tested; generally, shots looked sharp but not oversharpened. In addition to the always reliable mm VR kit lens, I shot with the new pro-level mm f3. In many ways I think the mm is a great lens optically, but I didn't like the feel of the zoom ring--it's feels inconsistent and a little too tight--and it's too heavy for a light body like the D's.

Subtle detail: Hair Noise suppression tends to blur detail in areas of subtle contrast, though detail remains strong in the darker parts of the model's hair here.

The Nikon D is an entry-level digital SLR camera boasting a newly designed megapixel DX format sensor, a quick-access Live View mode, one-touch Full HD video recording with autofocus, plus an interactive Guide mode, a sensor dust buster and an point autofocus module. Like last year's D, the new Nikon D is a rather small DSLR camera, although it does come with a fairly chunky right-hand grip that makes it better suited to hand-held shooting than some of its competitors. Still, expect having to find a place for your little finger under the camera if you have larger-than-average hands. The body itself is mainly plastic, but while the camera certainly doesn't feel as robust as some of the company's higher specified models, it still exudes a degree of quality you might not expect at this price point. This is helped by the surprisingly classy rubber coating on the grip, which also appears on the thumb rest in the back of the camera. The Nikon D's body is a new design, 30 grams lighter than that of its predecessor, but the designers have gone to great lengths to make sure most controls are in the same places as before.

Recommended cameras and lenses. In many ways I think the mm is a great lens optically, but I didn't like the feel of the zoom ring--it's feels inconsistent and a little too tight--and it's too heavy for a light body like the D's. This covers a pretty wide range of saturation levels, about as wide a range as you're likely to find photographically relevant, apart from special effects that are arguably better achieved in software. Live View is only available in second bursts and a countdown timer is displayed to show you how long until the camera defaults to normal viewfinder viewing mode. Ultimately, there's no substitute for printing a lot of images and examining them closely. Typical continuous-shooting speed in frames per second Longer bars indicate better performance. The arrow pad is used to advance, rewind and pause movie playback and you can adjust audio volume with the playback zoom buttons. How bright is this?

In the table above, mousing over a link at the bottom will load the corresponding crop in the area above. The illustrations below show the differences between the D top and D below finder screens. Right of the monitor is the arrow pad multi-selector, which has a central OK button. The D's body is a little smaller and lighter than the D's--it's the lightest in its class--but Nikon has also managed to cram more direct-access controls onto it. ISO 12, look good, but with a watercolor painting effect at 8x12 inches. Smallish viewfinder; slower than the competition; no bracketing. As you can see, results from a RAW file converted with Nikon's ViewNX 2 software were very similar to the in-camera JPEG, and the software wasn't really able to extract more detail, though contrast and noise is a bit higher at default settings. For this reason, we now routinely print sample images from the cameras we test on our Canon Pro Mark II studio printer, and on the Canon Pixma MP here in the office. The Good Excellent photo quality; well-laid-out controls; interesting, user-friendly Guide mode; full manual controls in video capture. Nikon D The browser interface has been updated and displays thumbnails for stills JPEG and raw files and video clips in shooting order.
