Like, a year ago late first seeing the excellent anime and then read the manga from there on through. I came to learn and love the characters, and started to invest in the series and then I saw how terrible a coach Komogawa is and sadly, how ultimately terrible Ippo had become as a protagonist. You can argue all day about his training, hard work and dedication making him a good protagonist but he failed in the end with a series by design meant for him to succeed through said, training, hard work and dedication.

All his life, cowardly high school student Makunouchi Ippo is seen as an easy target for bullies Saved from a beating by Takamura, Ippo is exposed to the awe-inspiring world of boxing A steadfast, intense desire to be strong leads Ippo to take his first step toward being a pro-boxer. Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Constantly running errands and being beaten up by his classmates, Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself, but never has the passion to act upon it. One day, in the midst of yet another bullying, Ippo is saved by Takamura Mamoru, who happens to be a boxer. Ippo faints from his injuries and is brought to Takamura boxing gym to recover. As he regains consciousness, he is awed and amazed at his new surroundings in the gym, though lacks confidence to attempt anything. It is only then that Ippo feels something stir inside him and eventually asks Takamura to train him in boxing. Thinking that Ippo does not have what it takes, Takamura gives him a task deemed impossible and gives him a one week time limit.

Ippo Makunouchi is an average and overly-shy high school teenager. His mother runs a fish boat shop and he constantly has to help her with it, and thus has no friends. Constantly bullied because of this, Ippo wonders what it would be like to be strong.
You should check out The Promised Neverland, pblimp. It happening wasn't bad in and of itself, the way the buildup to it was handled was. Sometimes you can give it your all and still lose. Summary : Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Ippo gets hit wayyy too much and him getting back up through guts and spirit isn't exactly ideal to a boxer's life.
