Primarcs
Biologically engineered Demi-Gods made by a god-king to help rule primarcs vast brutal universe of Warhammer: 40K.
Alex Evans. Published: Nov 24, The Warhammer 40k primarchs are immensely powerful Space Marine generals, created by the Emperor of Mankind in the late 30th millennium to lead his armies in the Great Crusade and reconquer the galaxy. In the 41st millennium, some are dead, many lost, and some returned to fight both for and against the Imperium — this guide has the full story. According to sources among the Black Library Horus Heresy novel series and other Games Workshop lore texts, the Emperor originally created 20 Warhammer 40k primarchs in his secret gene-labs under the Himalaya mountain range: one to lead each of his new Space Marine legions.

Primarch Sanguinius holding off the armies of Chaos by himself during the Siege of Terra. The Primarchs were the twenty genetically-engineered "sons" of the Emperor of Man. The Emperor used his own DNA in their creation, and they were designed to be gods among men; immortal giants with superhuman physique and intelligence, towering above the Space Marines as they do over mortal men. They were also incredibly charismatic, as their main role was to be generals and leaders of the Imperial military. The Primarchs were created in a secret facility in the Himalayan Mountains under the tightest security. However, the forces of Chaos somehow managed to spirit the infants away just prior to their maturation. They were scattered on different worlds across the galaxy, beyond the Emperor's reach. The genetic material of a single Primarch was used to found a single Space Marine Legion , twenty in total. This war of unification was known as the Great Crusade. One by one the Primarchs were found and united with their Legions, performing great deeds and becoming legends of the Imperium. This golden age ended with the Horus Heresy , when nine turned traitors and attempted to place Primarch Horus on the Imperial throne. The Imperium prevailed, but all loyalist Primarchs are since either slain, disappeared or incapacitated. Of the traitor Primarchs, some were killed but most remain Daemon Princes in the realm of Chaos. The order of Primarch rediscovery follows the patterns of Dante's Inferno and Paradiso, for the Traitors and Loyalists respectively, as do many of their personalities and the concepts they symbolise or emobody.
He had not, primarcs. Was mortally wounded by Fulgrim after the Heresy, and put into stasis for millennia — then revived in So rehomed, the primarchs grew up on remote worlds, primarcs, in radically different conditions — some in primarcs opulence, others in squalor or slavery.
Theirs will be the strength to prevail, not only when victory lies within easy reach, but even when it seems unattainable, when doom settles like a shroud all about. In those times of darkness, my noble sons will shine the brightest of all. The primarchs were the 20 genetically-engineered transhuman "sons" of the Emperor of Mankind created in the late 30 th Millennium. They were intended to be the immortal and superhuman generals and proconsuls who would command the Emperor's Great Crusade to reunite the scattered Human race beneath His leadership. Their genomes later served as the genetic templates from which the Emperor crafted His 20 Space Marine Legions. The primarchs were bred to be perfect generals, warriors and statesmen; larger, stronger, faster, and smarter than any normal Human could ever hope to be. They possessed a potent charisma and martial prowess that made them like the mythical gods of old, untouchable by disease, old age or supposedly the petty failings of lesser men.

The Investiary, part of the Imperial Palace on Terra , which once contained the statues of all 20 primarchs on ouslite plinths in a silent ring. They were, for unknown reasons, deliberately expunged along with the Astartes of their Legions from all known Imperial records and archives before the onset of the Horus Heresy in the early 31 st Millennium. Referred to as "the forgotten and the purged" it is known only that the missing primarchs and their Legions are listed as having been "deleted from Imperial records. This formal censure and erasure from official records is known as an Edict of Obliteration , also called a Damnatio Memoriae , a High Gothic phrase meaning "condemnation of memory. This is the official Imperial policy of deliberately destroying any records, icons or other symbols or monuments pertaining to an individual or organisation, usually of the Imperial elite, who has been declared Excommunicate Traitoris by the Emperor of Mankind before He was interred within the Golden Throne , the High Lords of Terra or the Inquisition. In a galaxy -spanning empire that stresses fealty and loyalty to the Emperor in return for advancement, acclaim and spiritual salvation for its elites, this is perhaps one of the most severe punishments. The complete and utter erasure of all records of the II and XI Legions is considered by Imperial historians as the most successful Edict of Obliteration ever carried out in Imperial history.

It meant that, when Horus finally sprang his trap in the Isstvan system to kick off the war, loyalist forces were spread far and wide; communications were patchy due to warp storms; and he could successfully lure, trap, and massacre the best part of three entire legions in one day. Though he does still lead his Emperor's Children in daring raids and dark crusades against the Imperium every now and then over the millennia, Fulgrim is more content to do his own thing. At least one of the primarchs, Corvus Corax , is known to have briefly stayed in his designated apartment during a visit to Terra at the beginning of the Horus Heresy. A planet whose populace was shunned from the wider galaxy because of their abilities, Magnus fit right in. At the height of the Great Crusade , the Imperial Warmaster Horus fell to the temptations of Chaos , and convinced eight of his fellow brother primarchs to rebel against the Emperor and follow him in his attempt to supplant the Master of Mankind. But before all that he spent centuries in stasis from injuries he sustained after a poison demon blade was stabbed into his neck by his brother Fulgrim after he had become a Daemon Prince of Chaos. Rick Priestley, one of the major sources for their creation, was heavily into both Dante and Milton at the time, and many of the themes involved in their works were utilised. Please bear in mind that there is a difference in time between when a primarch was found by the Emperor, and when the primarch took command of his Legion. Horus is currently gone, not dead, deleted from the Universe. However, instead of taking his son immediately under his wing, the two spoke for hours. What happened after is up for debate as Vulkan seemingly disappeared. This event left him with great shame and as recompense, he vanished into the Eye of Terror as an act of penance. This was a massive setback to the Emperor's plans. Killed Ferrus Manus and mortally wounded Roboute Guilliman.
Horus , also called Horus Lupercal , or more simply The Lupercal during his lifetime by the Astartes of his Luna Wolves Legion , was one of the 20 genetically-engineered primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind from the foundation of His own DNA before the start of the Great Crusade to lead the armies of the newborn Imperium of Man. He was also the first Imperial Warmaster , the most favoured son of the Emperor, and ultimately, the greatest traitor in the history of Mankind.
Like the gods of mythic Terran legend, the primarchs strode the battlefields of the galaxy, and their power proved irresistible. The forces of Chaos have split the galaxy in two, the Necrons are awakening en masse and the Tyranids are pushing deeper into Imperial space. Like his other fallen brothers, Perturabo is now an immortal Daemon Prince. According to data slates, this was a technologically advanced world that was ruled by a wealthy elite , whilst those below the poverty line lived in slums or were slaves. Guilliman was brought back into the Warhammer 40k storyline at the launch of 8th edition in , and the Lion returned at the beginning of Warhammer 40k 10th edition in Most notably when he encountered Ancient Rylanor on Isstvan III 10, years later after the Dropsite Massacre in an abandoned and ruined subterranean warehouse. He would become close with his brother Primarch Ferrus Manus, but unfortunately, over time he would fall to the seduction of Chaos and give into the excesses of Slaanesh. He sided with the loyalists during the Dropsite Massacre and was captured and tortured by his brother Primarchs , mainly Curze. Raven Guard. M41 after the Fall of Cadia. Another of the Fallen Primarchs to become a Daemon Prince , Magnus had his magic magnified massively after his transformation into a Champion of Tzeentch. In M42 he leads the Death Guard in wars across the galaxy. His greater power came in influence and oratory.
