The residual oil could be enough to generate enough pressure to make the oil light flicker rather than glow steadily.

You have it ALL wrong,the OP drove 50 miles with the problem occouring during this 50 miles,it did not take 50 miles for the damage to be done and everyone should check their oil level after a oil change, and there is no Tooth Fairy either. It seized after the oil was all gone, not while there was still oil in it. They are supposed to check for leaks after the oil change. Wont load up from what it sounds like. Oil has great surface tension, so oil leaking out of a plug would have no trouble reaching the rear axle as the air passing under the car carried it back along the floor pan and suspension, especially if he was driving over 30 MPH.
