Ever since Bulbasaur, people have asked me if I'm ever going to review "shiny" Pokemon; the color variants so rare, I've only encountered one in twenty years of playing these games. Pokemon with slightly different colors than normal aren't really something I think can sustain a lot of in-depth opinion on my part, to be honest, but we're going to go through about fifty of them here that I find noteworthy. The first forty because I find their specific color variations interesting in some way, and the final ten because they're shiny versions of my all-time favorite Pokemon species - whether they're "bad" shinies or solid ones. Let's begin with a recent one that I think shows off the real potential of this feature. Even if I actually find this Pokemon's default colors more pleasing, the shiny feels as though every color was thoughtfully selected to look like a variant species of exotic fish. It's a tacky set of colors that don't perfectly go together, but we see that in plenty of actual marine life. It's believably, naturally tacky. Regular Chandelure has one of the most beautiful designs and color schemes of just about any Pokemon, if you ask me, and the shiny changes it up quite nicely. I like the pink eyes, the brighter blue and the actually orange flames, though I think they missed an opportunity not giving its glass bulb a redder color.

A star with silver arms and golden center looks extremely valuable, and the blue pearl at the middle is just the final detail that makes this shiny so awesome. My criteria is mostly just which shiny versions look really cool and even better than the pokemon coolest shiny pokemon.

Groudon already has an incredibly imposing dinosaur-like design, and the primary red coloring fits its ability to manipulate the land and magma, which is what makes its yellow-green shiny variant stand out so much. The base version of this species is already one of the most inventive modern creature designs, combining a frog with a ninja theme. However, Greninja's Shiny variation is perhaps the best of the two, swapping its primary blue color scheme to black. This variant gives Chandelure's flames a traditional orange and its body a brighter tone to contrast its normal design. True to its Water typing, Suicune has arguably the most regal design of its contemporaries, and its Shiny form only adds to it.

Rayquaza is one of the strongest and most widely known Pokemon. I still love what they did here. The color alone is likely to get many hunters excited to add this one to their collections. Seizing an opportunity the Vanillish line infuriatingly passed up on, shiny Slurpuff opts for a "different flavor" of dessert, trading strawberry pink for delicious chocolatey brown. It goes from a creature of molten rock to a creature of molten lead or bubbling mercury, and it's just a shame that this is lost when it evolves into Magcargo, whose shiny is a very nice pale purple but still not as interesting conceptually. It is given as a reward in Generation Five for completing a very difficult task. Later versions of Shiny Charizard would feature a gunmetal grey body and red inner wings paired with fiery crimson eyes. Luxray is an Electric-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 4, whose design is based on a lynx. While still a cute Fairy-Type Pokemon, the purple color that replaces the green plant-like areas gives it a slightly more mysterious and sinister look. Maybe beards are the be all and end all after all. I feel like they could have stood to change the color of its lacey clothing-like markings too, though, maybe make them mostly black.
