Pioneer argyle camper
With a well established and rich history building custom off-road touring camper trailers and micro-hybrids Pioneer Campers has gone from strength to strength since its inception in An Australian Family Owned and Operated business specialising in design and development of sheet-metal off-road campers and caravans including the Tvan and T4, pioneer argyle camper.
But such was the case recently when the keys of the all-new Pioneer Argyle SE were thrown our way. Surrounded by prime Angus beef, we eagerly set about our task. Pioneer brings bold styling cues to set itself apart from many of the other manufacturers in the hardfloor segment, while still packaging a comprehensive feature set. Snubbing the standard box shape, the body incorporates a duck tail design for improved clearance and an eye-catching profile. Representing the mid-point in the five-model range, the Argyle SE offers a good selection of standard fittings for offroad exploration. The foundation is a heavy-duty, hot-dipped galvanised chassis riding on an independent trailing-arm coil suspension with gas shock absorbers. A simple, but effective offroad Treg coupling sits upfront with an Anderson plug and mechanical handbrake; the latter part of a 10in electric drum brake option.

The Pioneer Argyle will have you stopped, set up and relaxing for an overnight stay in less than five minutes, but it also has the rugged construction to get you safely to a remote destination. You can opt up and spend more on palatial campers with all the frills, but this layout gives me everything I need in a reliable camping companion. The running gear will take you on that long outback trek safely and get you back home again, still loving your new best mate. Up front is a Treg offroad coupling with seven pin plug plus an Anderson plug. The Argyle has Al-Ko hydraulic override brakes for flexibility with 10in electric brakes available as an option. The override brakes are more than suitable in all but the most difficult scenarios, and generally give trouble-free service due to their simplicity. I was pleased to see a fully removable, swing-up combination 8in pneumatic jockey wheel, showing real attention to detail. Its raised floor living space gets you up off the ground with a solid base that helps keep the dirt, dust and creepy crawlies at bay. The set-up time is very fast and easy with less than five minutes to set up for an overnighter, and probably around 10 minutes if you want to peg and stake out the 4. There is only one adjustable support required at the rear of the trailer as the floor steadies the camper when folded out on its own adjustable legs if you park up on uneven or rocky ground. At the front of the main body is an enclosed jerry can holder and woodbox-style enclosure. It is capable of carrying three jerry cans but is also an excellent place to store timber, wet awnings or even wetsuits due to its perforated floor it will get dusty in there, though. Either side of the container are foldaway compartments with the passenger side unit containing a 9kg gas cylinder and a manual water pump.

Four models feature in the Pioneer line-up. The Enduro is a lightweight camper trailer designed mainly for onroad use and to be towed by small- to medium-sized vehicles — excellent for people who want to experience the camper trailer lifestyle, but not necessarily the offroad component. Next up the line are the Prospector and Prospector II, both featuring all the necessary basics for offroad travel and a price to match. An interesting feature of the Argyle is its nameplate Tare weight of kg. What it did reveal was a hot-dipped galvanised chassis built using box section construction.
I have been a fan of Pioneer's range of hard floor camper trailers ever since I first laid eyes on them. They are neat, solid units with a sleek, no-nonsense, high-riding body. One look at them and you know it's the kind of camper you want behind you when you're tackling hard days on tough tracks in the fourbie; one in which you can look forward to a soft bed and a hot meal. The Pioneer Argyle SE 4x4 is a solid offroader that's exceptionally light for its class. Unladen, it weighs in at kg and it's rated to kg, giving it a massive kg payload. Built on an extra heavy duty hot dipped galvanised chassis, the body is constructed from 1. The weight is kept down by combining this with checker plate aluminium where possible. It sits on a Grafta independent suspension system with double action Discovery shocks and 15in wheels shod with all-terrain tyres; a spare is mounted under the chassis. Running gear up front includes a mesh stone guard, a swing-down jockey wheel and a Treg hitch. I wasn't a huge fan of its hydraulic disc brakes, because you need to get out of the car and flip over a greasy metal plate to stop the brakes engaging when you reverse.
