At the start of , Perth welcomed another brewpub to its growing collection — and what a venue and story it represents. Not too long before greeting the first guests to arrive at The Clubroom in City West, the team behind Phat Brew Club were still playing around as homebrewers, before success in a competition sent them hurtling in a rather different direction. Prior to entering the Margaret River Brewhouse's Backyard Brewing Tournament in , Travis Moore and his football mates had seen their love of brewing grow organically from a simple homebrewing kit via hosting homebrew events of their own. But everything changed when their Phat Porter took out top spot. Part of the prize was to have their winning brew scaled up for commercial release, an opportunity they grabbed with all their hands, following it up soon afterwards with the release of a fruit salad sour called Phatizzle.

When mates get together to brew a beer, it often doesn't start with commercial ambitions, instead just being a way to catch up. But, for the team behind Phat Brew Club, regular brew days and a passion for good beer have led to a canned and kegged release for sextet of Perth homebrewers who have been working together for the last six years. In , the co-op won the Margaret River Brewhouse Backyard Brewing competition with their Coffee Cream Porter; their prize included brewing their award-winning recipe on the MRB kit and having it poured at the venue. It was an opportunity that gave the ambitious garage brewers a push to take things further. Since then, Phat Brew Club have shifted their focus into expanding their reach, launching version two of their coffee cream porter in cans and distributing to the masses, with the aim of boosting their presence in the booming Western Australian craft scene. In time, the group hopes to establish a cellar door and, of course, expand their canned and kegged offerings.
