Throughout history the Stranger has appeared before many heroes, present for some of the most pivotal moments in time. The Phantom Stranger is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics , of unspecified paranormal origins, who battles mysterious and occult forces, sometimes under their Vertigo imprint. The Phantom Stranger first appeared in an eponymous six-issue comics anthology published in and created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino. After an appearance in Showcase 80 February , he received another series beginning May—June [3] that lasted until February—March These had Dr. Thirteen, certain that the Phantom Stranger was an impostor, determined to expose him. In these stories, while the Stranger's past remained a mystery, the writers added a semi-regular cast of characters for him. The stories hinted at a romantic attraction between the Stranger and Craft, but he eventually left her, deciding she could not be part of his life, convincing her he had been killed in their final battle against the Dark Circle. Doctor Thirteen, dropped along with the reprints, was given a back-up series here as of 12 March-April which morphed into "The Spawn of Frankenstein " in 23 January-February The second volume originally ended somewhere along the months of February or March within the year or , with a total of 41 issues. In the later years of and , a forty-second issue was added to the second series during the Blackest Night event, effectively a one-shot. Most of those short stories were written by Mike W. Barr; one was written by Paul Levitz. These were mostly morality tales in the style of The Phantom Stranger vol.
The Stranger subsequently became one of the forces that stood against the Spectre when it went on a rampage without its human host, until the soul of Hal Jordan bonded with it. The man who would become the Phantom Stranger is the only one of the three who openly repents his actions, while his identity is never ultimately mentioned, it is heavily implied that he is Judas Iscariot. The first story shows him interacting with Jim Corrigan who in the process is gunned down and becomes the Spectre as a direct consequence. The Phantom Stranger learns from it, is how he is to earn forgiveness for his sins is to ultimately betray those he encounters either for their own good or that of the world, even if it horrifies him to do so. The Phantom Stranger's background has never been revealed in full.
The Phantom Stranger is a mysterious supernatural guide and specialist in the occult. His paranormal origins and even his true nature are largely unknown, although he has acted as an agent of the Lords of Order. In the The New 52 reboot, the Stranger is shown to be Judas Iscariot from the Bible roaming around the universe in guilt over causing the death Jesus Christ. Judas Iscariot killed himself, filled with regret after betraying his closest friend, Jesus of Nazareth , for thirty silver pieces. Rather than the Heaven or Hell he expected, he had found himself in a strange chamber, faced with the Council of Wizards. Though he felt he deserved his fate, he begged forgiveness, not knowing how dire his punishment would be. There were two others alongside him, and the wizards called them all the Trinity of Sin : The world's most egregious sinners. The wizards gave his punishment first, charging him with avarice, and forever branding the thirty pieces of silver that he had earned into his skin—though he knew that greed was not his greatest crime; it was the betrayal. He awoke in the field of blood, alive. This place was significant to the crime he committed.
