The tannery occupied acres that were eventually divided between Petoskey State Park and the commercial district on U. Highway At its peak, the tannery employed some workers and processed over hides—primarily buffalo—per day. The Michigan Conservation Commission approved the creation of Petoskey State Park on the old tannery lands—with the potentiality of also purchasing the city's bathing beach for inclusion as well—in June The park offers a mile-long sand beach for swimming, a trail that ascends the Old Baldy sand dune, picnicking facilities, and a site campground. One of the premier destinations for campers and outdoor lovers is tucked away between Petoskey and Harbor Springs- the Petoskey State Park. What was once the Petoskey Bathing Beach, a park for the city of Petoskey, is now a state park with all the amenities plus a spectacular beach area. Picnic areas, camping areas, marked trails, miles of beach, a beach shelter, playground, and summer recreational activities are on hand for visitors in the acre park.
