The wait for The Doors of Stone , the third and final book in Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy, has been ongoing for over a decade with fans still waiting for news of its release. Rothfuss has always planned the main Kingkiller Chronicle story - i. However, with the first, The Name of the Wind , released all the way back in and the second, The Wise Man's Fear , in , there's still no sign of book number three. The Doors of Stone title was revealed many years ago, but like George R. Martin's The Winds of Winter , there's still no release date confirmed. Despite the growing popularity of the book franchise and various attempts to adapt the series into a show or movie, there has been little movement on the third book and the long wait for The Doors of Stone continues. Rothfuss initially had ambitious plans for The Kingkiller Chronicle series: with The Name of The Wind finished and set for publication in , the author planned to deliver the second book a year later, and the third and final book just a year after that. The Kingkiller Chronicle series depicts the past and present life of Kvothe, an adventurer, musician, and wizard, and there are a couple of orders to consume his story and read the books and short stories and novellas. Patrick Rothfuss wrote the fantasy trilogy and subsequent works, which received instant acclaim following the first book's release. Even George R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, was open about his love for the second novel after it was published, calling it one of his favorite fantasy books that year. Plans for adaptations of The Kingkiller Chronicle have been discussed for years, and, unfortunately, updates on the projects are slim. They have been in development hell since , even though they made some progress in when Rothfuss announced that Lionsgate would adapt his novels through a movie, television series, and video game. Several big names have been tied to the projects, including Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sam Raimi, but nothing else is known about the adaptations including if they are still being worked on.

The series centers on a man named Kvothe, an infamous adventurer and musician telling his life story to a scribe. However, these projects have yet to come to fruition, adding another layer of anticipation and uncertainty for fans of the series. Could the Cthaeh have driven him to do all of the things that he's done? We know that the Cthaeh and the Lackless box smell exactly the same. Given some of this was already written as The Lightning Tree, completing an extended version may have been more achievable for Rothfuss.
