South Unit The south unit of the park is located just 30 minutes from Dickinson and it features 36 miles of paved road winding through the badlands, perfect for a driving tour. The unit includes more than 60 miles of marked trails, plus countless unmarked trails. Riders are permitted in all areas of the park, except camping and picnicking areas and nature trails. A horse campground is available in the south unit by reservation; back country horse camping is allowed. Trails traverse a mixture of grasslands and badlands topography with some trails requiring steep climbs or descents.
