However, a chance encounter with Luz Noceda , and the meeting of a mysterious palisman named Flapjack who chooses Hunter as his partner, gives Hunter a new perspective and a glimpse of life outside the Emperor's Coven.

There, he found acquaintances in Hexside's students, and after coming to terms with his identity, Hunter made it his goal to help them stand against Belos' plan to wipe out the Demon Realm. Hunter, like many of the Golden Guards before him, was created with the likeness of Belos' late older brother, Caleb Wittebane. He has a fair complexion, a slightly hooked nose, dark magenta eyes, thick black eyebrows, a gap between his front teeth, bags under his eyes, and ash-blond hair that is shaved below the top, with a long, jagged forelock. He has a notch on his left ear and scars on his right cheek, upper left arm, two on his right kneecap, forming an X-mark, and one on his left calf. He is described as scrawny by Amity in " Eclipse Lake ". While staying in the Human Realm, Hunter had his hair and forelock trimmed by Willow, giving him short bangs. When Belos possessed him, parts of Hunter's skin, left ear, and face became basil-green that spread to his arms, turning them into the ones of Belos' corrupted form while also gaining the blue eyes and antler-like horns of the latter. His hair also grew longer, which restored his forelock bang. After being healed from Flapjack's sacrifice, Hunter received tissue scarring in the areas Belos corrupted and his eyes became brown.

Hearing this, Hunter gives off a golden aura and teleports out of the vines and comforts Willow, saying she means a lot to him.

Hunter is so precious. He still wants to play the villain, trying in vain to act threatening to Luz and friends while furthering the agenda of Emperor Belos. Watching characters like Zuko, Catra , Lilith , and so many others in the stories we love begin as villains before slowly coming to terms with their own destiny and changing sides is a slice of poetic brilliance that never gets old. He had a singular goal, and would burn down entire villages to see it through. It seemed like the easier path, or a clouded one, so they all took it. Hunter is similar, but younger and still caught up in a corrupt system that he is irreparably attached to. Our sad boy just wants to be loved.

Unbeknownst to them, a remnant of Belos follows Hunter to the Human Realm and ends up possessing him, nearly killing his friends and Flapjack in the process. This gives Hunter the strength to finally stand up to his uncle, and he sacrifices himself in an attempt to defeat him once and for all.

When the bird comes to him later, he tells the palisman he previously called "bird" to leave before Belos could see him, knowing the fate that falls upon any palisman his uncle gets his hands on, but becomes surprised when Flapjack picks him to be his bounded witch by turning into a staff in front of him. Hunter and Amity eventually come to a stalemate, but Amity is forced to hand the key over when Hunter threatens Luz's safety. As Luz is about to say what he is, he interrupts her and pulls her aside to say he has yet to tell them he is a grimwalker and does not walk to. After fighting side-by-side in the old mine, Hunter acknowledges that the little bird never left his side and begins to bond with him.
