Although those villains have been vanquished, there's no rest for the women of Litchfield. In season 6, our inmates have to contend with Carol Henny Russell and Barbara Mackenzie Phillips Denning, the big, bad rulers of maximum security prison. They both possess the ability to give rousing impromptu speeches.

By James Patrick Herman. Sentenced to life following the murder of their kid sister compounded with drug-dealing charges , the siblings-turned-archenemies spend the better part of thirteen episodes trying to off each another. How were you lured out of semi-retirement? I never thought I would get the job. It was [about] two sisters, but it turned out I was reading from the flashback [scene] — the younger sisters. I read the breakdown. And I knew that she was a drug kingpin in the prison before I accepted the job. Barb kills her younger sister without remorse and she plans to kill her other sister in prison. I would say that she has a lot of issues. I really just put myself in a world where this was possible. I wanted to discover how I felt when I was doing it with the other actors instead of deciding how I was going to feel before I even got on set. I just wanted to walk in and see what happened. And it was the kind of set where you could do that.

We soon discover that the reason Frieda attempts to take her own life isn't because of where she is now, but who is in there with her. Despite this, she was still much friendlier and humorous than Carol.

Part of the appeal of Orange Is The New Black is that it plays with the idea that there are "good" and "bad" people, but Season 6 introduces two villains with a shocking streak of cruelty. The backstory of Carol and Barb Denning, played by Henny Russell and Mackenzie Phillips respectively, is explored multiple time throughout the season, and involves bloodshed, a drowning, and a disagreement about which of the two has the right to share a mildly amusing anecdote about the glass of ice. The first indication that Carol and Barb are not forces to be reckoned with comes in Episode 3 of Season 6, which features flashbacks to Frieda's time in the Litchfield Maximum Security Prison before she was transferred to the minimum security "camp" where the show spent its first five seasons. Carol and Barb both run their own drug-running empires inside of the prison, but Frieda manages to rat them both out, resulting in them getting time in the prison and in Frieda getting sent to minimum in return for her cooperation. However, the competing drug trades are actually pretty tame crimes in comparison to what put Carol and Barb in prison together. In Episode 10 of Season 6, the backstory of the Denning sisters is revealed in full and it is arguably the series' darkest backstory ever, at least in my opinion.

Before they are in orange, blue, khaki, or even pink uniforms, the inmates of Litchfield are just regular people committing regular crimes. While the writers and producers of Orange Is the New Black show us some pretty dark offenses — like Lorna's attempt to murder Christopher's girlfriend and the young boy who falls to his death while trying to leave Suzanne's apartment — season six introduces two new characters and one of the most gruesome crimes we've seen yet. Meet Barb and Carol Denning: they are the OGs of Litchfield, as we learn they've been in max for quite some time, and they're also the reason for the intensely divided C-Block and D-Block. While Barb Mackenzie Phillips and Carol's Henny Russell crews are behind all the pranks and violence in the present-day season six, the flashbacks to their sociopathic teenage days immediately send chills down our spines. Frieda Dale Soules uses Suzanne Uzo Aduba to protect her in Florida throughout the whole season, but she finally explains to Crazy Eyes why she's been hiding from the Denning sisters in one of the final episodes. Although survivalist Frieda doesn't quite explain what she did decades ago to piss off the sisters , she does tell Suzanne about why they're in prison, referring to them as "the little Debbie murderers. It's clear Barb and Carol hate each other now that they're in different prison families, but their hatred starts long before lock-up, back when they're just teenagers in the '80s.

We're Hiring! She states due to Frieda's actions, she got 30 more years and never became sober. The other sister disputes this, claiming that that happened to them , and that their sister had no right to tell that story — which resulted in a decades-long turf war between C-block and D-block. The Denning family's lives revolve around Debbie's gymnastics career, and the older sisters not only resent her because of this, but want to kill her for making them move to Texas. Barbara attempts to intimidate Frieda and Carol, until Frieda pulls a shiv out on Barbara and her gang, causing them to walk away. Impressed, Barbara tells Debbie that she's "alright" , but this is interrupted when Carol runs at Debbie with a hatchet. In episode three, there's a flashback to a young Frieda and Carol, who are doing pretty well for themselves by selling drugs via a hideout they have in the prison library. For Barbara in D-Block, that means conquering the drug import business. While Barb Mackenzie Phillips and Carol's Henny Russell crews are behind all the pranks and violence in the present-day season six, the flashbacks to their sociopathic teenage days immediately send chills down our spines. Barbara interrupts Carol's story and tells the group that it instead happened to her, and not Carol. She never appears to express guilt, unless it is for herself. After getting thirty more years added to her sentence, Barbara became dependent on oxycontin. Though less intelligent and harsh than Carol, Barbara was still a very smart and deceptive woman. Later, Carol is seen playing cards yet again.
