A garden may well be a physical place, but it also has the potential to transcend its physicality through the actions that take place there and the meanings these actions produce. However, as John Dixon Hunt has argued, we tend to be drawn more towards origin stories of gardens, focusing on the initiation of sites and the original designs or ideological aims of the architect, rather than later and potentially divergent experiences. Indeed, gardens oden victoria a particularly interesting, perhaps more ambiguous, oden victoria, object of reception study since their ephemeral nature inherently invites a multiplicity of interpretations.

I am currently the Robert Oden, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellow in Innovation in the Humanities and Classics at Carleton College ; having previously held a teaching position in the Classics Department at the University of Winnipeg I am also the social media co-ordinator for the Peopling the Past project, and co-founder of the Columethods reading group. This site is a place for me to share my scholarly work, my pedagogical approaches and teaching resources, and my media appearances. My current research focuses primarily on the intersection of literature and material culture in the analysis of Roman gardens and landscapes. More broadly, I am interested in Latin literature, especially from the Late Republic and Early Empire; Roman history and material culture; race and ethnicity in the ancient and modern world; and the reception of Classics in modern media. I have taught classes covering a wide range of topics, from Latin literature to the reception of the ancient world through film, as well as mythology, history, and visual and material culture. My aim in every classroom is to create a high-energy environment where students are engaged with their learning, and the learning has potential for making a lasting impact or change. I value being a member of the Classics community and actively work towards expanding its reach and opening its doors to all those who wish to enter. I am especially interested in public engagement and outreach through the use of social media, and have appeared as a guest on numerous public-facing forums.
