Callum and Sephy are not sharply drawn characters -- there's too much plot to allow for lengthy characterizations -- and some other characters, such as Sephy's boyfriend Lekan, come off as a bit stereotypical. However, the micro-aggressions and racism experienced by Callum and fellow Noughts are clear and affecting; it's obvious that many darker-skinned characters relish their privilege though not every Cross is racist.

Apart from rising star Rowan and newcomer Baduza, the extended supporting cast is a tight ensemble working its way throught multiple, ambitiously-plotted strands.

However, I felt that the quality of the writing was at times poor, and the dialogue in particular was often unnecessarily simplistic in a way that jarred with the complexity of the subject matter.
