The race-reversal premise of this show effectively illustrates both small and large instances of racism that happen everyday to people of color in real life, effectively inspiring viewers to empathize with the have-nots. The show clearly has compassion for underdogs, and displays how power corrupts. Callum and Sephy are not sharply drawn characters -- there's too much plot to allow for lengthy characterizations -- and some other characters, such as Sephy's boyfriend Lekan, come off as a bit stereotypical. However, the micro-aggressions and racism experienced by Callum and fellow Noughts are clear and affecting; it's obvious that many darker-skinned characters relish their privilege though not every Cross is racist.

Apart from rising star Rowan and newcomer Baduza, the extended supporting cast is a tight ensemble working its way throught multiple, ambitiously-plotted strands.

Heartbreaking and utterly unfair. However, I felt that the quality of the writing was at times poor, and the dialogue in particular was often unnecessarily simplistic in a way that jarred with the complexity of the subject matter. I found the first few chapters quite slow going initially but it hits its stride about a third of the book in and from then, I couldn't put it down. A murder and other deaths take place on-screen, but there's no gore and little blood.
