F rom the early days of television, the police in all their guises have been an essential subject for programme makers worldwide. From the bobby on the beat in the cosy world of Dixon of Dock Green to the emotionally damaged detectives of today, with diversions into police procedurals and Scandinavian noir, the cop show has become a beloved TV institution containing many of the most compelling and memorable characters ever found on the small screen. Sure, its total seriousness borders on ham-fisted, and it inspired several great parodies, both during its run and after. But you know who had? On the surface, it was a lighthearted drama about a group of quirky cops, but underneath it was darker. One character is so preoccupied with death he wears a bulletproof vest everywhere ; another is secretly suffering from a brain tumor but refuses treatment. It was a unique cop drama but it was its uniqueness that ultimately killed the show. Network television in the s was about as play-it-safe an environment as you can imagine, so it remains one of those weird pop culture miracles that a television program as utterly insane as Sledge Hammer! Creator Alan Spencer took his inspiration from the Dirty Harry movies and period cop shows that took rule-breaking, trigger-happy, no-nonsense detectives as their heroes, and wondered what would happen if that hero was just a little bit… well, nuts.
