Norman Osborn was the son of the wealthy businessman Amberson Osborn. He had a decent childhood until Amberson lost most of the family fortune after his invention company's failure, which had Amberson becoming alcoholic and violent. Young Norman and his mother would often be the targets of physical and psychological abuse by Amberson to compensate for his failures. This abuse made Norman realize that only the strong survive and that he will never be weak. This realization caused him to kill the family's dog, seeing it as one less problem. On one cold and thunderous night, to cure his son's fear of the dark, Amberson locked Norman alone in one of the family's dark empty houses where Norman encountered and feared a "green, goblin-like" monster. Alone in the dark, Norman dreaded that the monster would eat him once the darkness is replaced by the light, so he came to grip with the darkness, wishing it would never leave him.

The Green Goblin and Norman Osborn are unusual characters in that they have two different eras. The weakness of Green Goblin is his inability to think clearly and focus. Expressive Mask : The Green Goblin's freaky mask may as well be his face given how expressive it is. Expert Marksman: As the Green Goblin, Norman uses various hand-held throwing weapons such as explosives and razor projectiles which he will throw with great aim rarely ever missing his target. The classical era which lasted until Issue published in , and the modern era which dates from the period at the end of The Clone Saga to the present day. In the Marvel Zombies universe, a zombified Green Goblin appears attacking Galactus alongside several other undead supervillains. However, unlike other Super-Adaptoids, he cannot duplicate weapons and appearances, leaving only the powers. The twins, that were in actuality genetically created constructs from Norman's and Gwen's DNA, were later taken with Osborn to Europe during his sabbatical. Hyde sneers that without his "clown costume" Norman isn't even worth contempt, Osborn force-feeds him explosive USB's with the following response: Norman Osborn: Not Flying Broomstick : The Green Goblin originally rode through the air on a one-man, miniature turbofan-powered vertical thrust "flying broomstick". Thankfully, the whole FF gets back just in time to save their kids, and kick Osborn out. He also gets along well enough with the Red Skull the one time they work together. However, his escape wasn't clean as he had lost his powers thanks to a special nanotech vaccine created by the Superior Spider-Man. Victor von Doom will crush us under his last mad gasp of air. Some release hallucinogenic gases, while others emit a specially-created mixture that neutralizes Spider-Man 's spider-sense for a limited period of time. The Red Goblin's next stop was at Alchemax to destroy the Anti-Venom stored there; he was successful, and was confronted by Spider-Man, who voided his deal with Osborn in doing so.
