Trove is an Australian online library database owned by the National Library of Australia in which it holds partnerships with source providers National and State Libraries Australia , an aggregator and service which includes full text documents , digital images , bibliographic and holdings data of items which are not available digitally, and a free faceted-search engine as a discovery tool. The database includes archives , images, newspapers, official documents, archived websites , manuscripts and other types of data. Based on antecedents dating back to , the first version of Trove was released for public use in late It includes content from libraries, museums, archives , repositories and other organisations with a focus on Australia. It allows searching of catalogue entries of books in Australian libraries some fully available online , academic and other journals, full-text searching of digitised archived newspapers, government gazettes and archived websites. It provides access to digitised images, maps, aggregated information about people and organisations, archived diaries and letters, and all born-digital content which has been deposited via National edeposit NED. Searchable content also includes music, sound and videos , and transcripts of radio programs.

The digitised newspaper collection was included alongside these aggregated resources in It was an extension of the Australian Newspaper Plan ANPlan founded in , and aims to make freely available as many Australian newspapers as possible and make sure that they remain available in perpetuity, regardless of future technological change. The pilot by the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program ANDP aimed to digitise 50, pages from twelve later eleven titles, moving towards three million pages over four years. These were curated from existing microfilm copies by the State and Territory Libraries of Australia with the aim of providing a sample of historical newspapers evenly distributed across the country. Funding for the digitisation of the newspaper collection has come from various sources. As of , the National and State Libraries Australia, other cultural heritage and research organisations, as well as community groups had directly funded the digitisation of about half of the newspaper pages available on Trove. This includes the State Library of New South Wales who alongside the National Library have been the most significant contributor to digitisation of newspapers and journals. The Australian Newspapers Beta service was launched in July as a standalone website and a year later became a fully integrated part of Trove. Shortly after launch, the system incorporated a platform for crowdsourced text-correction, allowing the public to improve the searchable text, as well as the ability to apply social tags to materials, create curated lists, and leave comments. These features have allowed a high degree of community engagement and enriched the collection. By , users were able to access , pages of digitised content. By mid, the newspaper collection had grown to Since , the National Library of Australia has invested heavily in expanding and improving access to its collections through updated digitisation, API and web interface protocols.
