I have only had the camera for a day and have not located the topic in the manual but when changing things like ISO, image quality or. I figure this is done because the top LCD is now pretty small so that info would be cramped? For example, the only thing that shows up. It does show. If anyone knows of a way to disable the rear panel from lighting up and just using the top LCD when changing ISO, quality or white. Which persuaded me that I don't actually know the answer to this.

January 9, If you want to change the way your Nikon D displays information on its LCD screen and viewfinder, you can do so by accessing the information display setting. This setting allows you to choose what information is displayed, and how it is displayed. For example, you can choose to have the shutter speed and aperture displayed in the viewfinder, or you can choose to have them displayed on the LCD screen. You can also choose to have the information displayed in both the viewfinder and the LCD screen. When you change settings such as ISO, image quality, or white balance, the information display on the back LCD will now illuminate. Other Nikons appear to display only when you press the info key, which is what you see when you press it. The back LCD can be changed to white option d8 to reduce distractions, but I had no idea the information display screen was included.

I'm not sure why the display on a D would default to on, but maybe this is all it needs.
