This is NHK News Web Easy, which hosts simplified versions of Japanese news articles with furigana, built-in dictionary gloss for certain words, and even an audio recording of the article being read aloud. While I love using manga for learning Japanese, these articles are a great reading supplement. The English translation of their name is Japanese Broadcasting Corporation. Over the years they have made many educational series for children and foreigners learning Japanese, and this site is one of their best efforts yet. NHK Web Easy News is really useful for those still learning Japanese as it addresses one of the hardest parts of learning Japanese — the multiple readings for kanji Chinese characters — by providing furigana readings using the hiragana phonetic script on all the kanji. It also tends to use quite straight forward grammar. The result, as is implied by the name of the service, is an easy-to-understand article. On many days there are only a couple of stories, but generally these will be among the key news stories of the day. Knowing that some of my students are using the service is one of the main reasons why I have signed up to updates as it means I can keep an eye on what stories students should be aware of. The other two articles are related to the Noto Peninsular Earthquake. I have not written much about this event yet — largely as I could not think of anything useful to contribute on it. The NHK Web Easy News articles are useful as they not only provide some details about the event itself, but also provide links to advice about how to prepare oneself for dealing with earthquakes and tsunami, or, in the case of the second article, how to make your own toilet which may sound like a funny story — but just think about how practical and important this could be and just how much people panicked about finding toilet paper when the COVID lockdowns started. In some ways NHK Web Easy News reminds me of a different service that I used to use many years ago which took a key story and turned it in to a manga. It tended to only do about one story a week and perhaps due to its infrequency I stopped checking it. NHK Web Easy News, thanks to being supported by NHK, is likely to keep going and have relatively frequent articles so it definitely one that I would recommend anyone learning Japanese and about Japan to use — but also to those like me who teach about Japan and some Japanese. During these trying times, getting access to the latest news is essential. But for those who, like me, fall squarely in the N3 intermediate language camp or below, reading Japanese news content can be a slog, or even impossible. By the time I get to the end of the article, the disaster may already be upon us! Fortunately, there is a news source that provides original Japanese-language news content that is a bit easier for foreign students of Japanese to consume and understand. The web site also includes fixed articles that provide useful information for foreigners in simplified Japanese. Most of these convey weather- and disaster-related guidance. If you are looking for native Japanese-language content at an intermediate level, visit the NHK News Web Easy site regularly to peruse its ongoing stream of up-to-date articles.
