Nerien is an Altmer member of the Psijic Order.

They act as guides to the Dragonborn throughout the main questline for the College of Winterhold. Just after the Dragonborn destroys a section of wall sealed with the Saarthal Amulet , a vision of the Psijic Monk Nerien appears to warn them that they have set into motion a series of events that they cannot stop, they will be judged on their actions, and the Psijic Order will be watching over them before vanishing. Quaranir casts a spell that freezes time around himself and the Dragonborn so that they may speak in private. He reveals that the orb found in Saarthal is named the Eye of Magnus , and it poses a great threat should it fall into the wrong hands. After he suggests that the Dragonborn should speak with the Augur of Dunlain , he ends the spell and takes his leave, feigning ignorance when Ancano demands answers from him. After the Dragonborn has spoken to the Synod Researcher Paratus Decimius in the Oculary of the Dwemer Ruins of Mzulft , Nerien appears to them again to warn them to return to the College of Winterhold at once, reminding them of a great challenge that is looming ahead of them before vanishing again.

The Psijic Order is an ancient order based on the island of Artaeum. They were said to have been indirectly responsible for the development of Mysticism , long before there was a name for it. When the Altmer began to settle more permanently on the Summerset Isles from their ancient home of Aldmeris , their culture began to change. They no longer worshipped the ancestor spirits, but several of those spirits such as Auri-El , Trinimac , Syrabane , and Phynaster became gods that the Altmer worshipped instead. Many elders, who called themselves the Psijics, rebelled against this trend, as they were the keepers of the Old Ways. They used their mystical powers to settle in Artaeum, away from the "corruption of their society. The earliest known recorded instance of the Psijic Order was in 1E 20 , when the renowned Breton sage Voernet met with Iachesis. Most of the people who lived on Artaeum, including the members of the Psijic Order who were thought to have died when Artaeum vanished, also reappeared as well.
