Through microbial, chemical, nutritional, engineering and genetic methods, our students and faculty directly impact the quality and safety of the US and international food supply. Opportunities available to Food Science graduates range from the public to the private sector including food production and packaging, food product development, government regulatory careers, academic teaching and technology transfer. Additional options include sensory science work flavor chemistry , food engineering, genetic mapping of bacterial strains used in food production like yogurt and pharmaceutical research as well as manufacturing options. The Food Science Bachelor of Science degree is offered through two curricula emphasizing science or technology. The science curriculum is designed for students desiring a more analytically intense program leading to technical careers in the food industry or graduate school. Students with an interest in business opportunities will find the technology program permits greater flexibility to pursue coursework in business, agricultural economics, or related fields. Students should consult their academic advisors to determine which courses fill this requirement. Consumer demand for safe, high quality, nutritious foods and biopharmaceutical products, as well as for educational programs designed to promote healthy eating, creates a variety of career opportunities in the food, pharmaceutical and the allied health industries.
The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences offers three undergraduate degree programs:. These programs focus on the application and integration of chemistry, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, and engineering disciplines in the development, production, and delivery of safe and nutritious foods and other products including drugs from food and bioprocessing operations, in addition to understanding the role of diet and how it generally affects human health. In support of each program, the department maintains modern, fully-equipped laboratories and a host of nutrition outreach opportunities for teaching and research. All three undergraduate programs are compatible with pre-professional school curricula, such as pre-med or pre-vet, and many students elect to take on a minor in an area that enhances their major coursework.
