Dimensions : H: 3. A set of twenty one craftsman-carved softwood figures from Italy for the Christmas celebrations in a Church or at home. They are accompanied by the three Wise Men, the Shepherds with some of their flock, plus the Angel Gabriel - who has an eyelet fitted at the rear so that he can be suspended above the scene; along with various other animals such as Goats, a Camel and Donkey. This wonderful set of carved wooden creations were crafted in Italy we believe by the company Faffaello who still create these same items today - although it appears that the modern day ones are not quite to the same standard of workmanship. The collection was the prize possession of the late Mother of a French friend of ours, who had this set for herself and a similar one that she had purchased for her daughter while on her many trips to Italy - and in particular Rome, on pilgrimages. So, as she had one already her daughter sold this wonderful collection to us in the hope that it will pass onto another family who would cherish it. Dimensions for standing figures is 3.

Whether life-size and displayed in front of a home or church, or smaller and set up inside a home, nativity scenes have been part of Christmas celebrations since the 13th century. Most also include sheep and other animals that might be found in a stable, as well as angels, shepherds, and the three Magi wise men. More elaborate scenes may feature additional scenery, structures, and other animals and figures. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, is credited with the first arrangement depicting the birth of Jesus when he created a living nativity scene using people and animals, apparently in an effort to inspire thoughts on the meaning of Christmas. Approved of even blessed by the Pope at the time, living nativity scenes soon became popular across Italy and beyond. Statues and figurines came to take the place of the living people and animals in nativity scenes and wealthy families sought to outdo each other with their elaborately carved and decorated scenes. As nativity scenes became fashionable beyond Italy, people in different countries adapted the scenes to meet their regional customs, materials, and styles, particularly in more heavily Catholic regions.
