Mythos is a book written by British author Stephen Fry , published in It is a retelling of a number of ancient Greek myths selected by Fry. It was followed by Fry's book Heroes , a retelling of myths about Greek heroes, [1] as well as a play titled Mythos: A Trilogy , [2] which premiered at the Shaw Festival in Ontario , Canada , in [3] and was set to tour the UK starting in August Fry states at the beginning of the book that no background knowledge is necessary to appreciate the stories and that "there is absolutely nothing academic or intellectual about Greek mythology; it is addictive, entertaining, approachable and astonishingly human". British scholar Edith Hall criticised Fry's limited selection of myths in her review for The Guardian [5] and said that the book's lack of a contents page or index means that the reader is not warned of its uncomprehensive nature. Some of my earliest memories of fantasy are taken straight from Jason and The Argonauts and Clash of the Titans the original, not the god-awful remake. The stop-motion animation of Ray Harryhausen obviously played a big part in that, as, before the days of CGI, there was something terrifyingly awesome about that fight scene with the skeletons. Considering they came into being thousands of years ago, the legends of Zeus and his fellow gods, of Jason and Perseus, of Medusa and the golden fleece, have echoed down through the ages, inspiring countless retellings and re-imaginings. Mythos, by Stephen Fry, is just the latest of these efforts, as he tries to capture the stories of Greek mythology for a modern audience.

This gorgeous volume invites you to explore a captivating world with the brilliant storyteller Stephen Fry as your guide. And I want a knee-length tunic for hunting in, because long dresses are stupid and impractical. However, this certainly has its place amongst other retellings. The Greek myths are the greatest stories ever told, passed down through millennia and inspiring writers and artists as varied as Shakespeare, Michelangelo, James Joyce and Walt Disney.
