Text description provided by the architects. This is the context in which the museum has proven itself with an understanding of the character of the region and especially the Kronborg Castle. Like a subterranean museum in a dry dock. Leaving the 60 year old dock walls untouched, the galleries are placed below ground and arranged in a continuous loop around the dry dock walls - making the dock the centerpiece of the exhibition - an open, outdoor area where visitors experience the scale of ship building. A series of three double-level bridges span the dry dock, serving both as an urban connection, as well as providing visitors with short-cuts to different sections of the museum.

Since the opening of the museum on 5 October , it has received several architectural and design awards , both for the exhibitions and the architecture which are positioned around the former dry dock. It was designed by Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group BIG , who won the competition to build a maritime museum within the walls of the dry dock with absolute nothing showing above ground to block the view of Kronborg Castle. Kronborg stands as a historical and literary monument for visitors and locals alike. When the decision was made to establish a new maritime museum near the old shipyard on the harbor in Elsinore, nothing was to block the view of the UNESCO-listed Renaissance castle. To be more precise, the museum was not to rise even a single inch above ground level. As such, the only possible construction site was down in the old dry dock.
