One night, in his travels with Puck , Guts encounters a group of bandits in a forest holding a girl named Jill captive. The hostile animation of a tree infused with evil spirits causes the captors to flee, leaving Guts to battle the entity until sunrise. Guts and Puck are lead by Jill to her village, where they learn of the mysterious "Misty Valley", as well as the ravenous attacks and child abductions by elf-like creatures said to originate from there. During Guts' fight with the elves and their apostle leader, Rosine , Puck informs him the "elves" are in fact the aforementioned abducted children. Mozgus then regains his composure before ordering his disciples to execute the remaining villagers with death by breaking wheel and resuming their journey. Mozgus then announces his intention to burn Casca at the stake, professing that her death will make the monsters disappear. The tallest of the group and seemingly oldest, a strong man with a misshapen skull. He assures them that there is nothing to fear. These minions are pseudo-apostles with angelic wings and fearsome powers, and they fought to the bitter end against Guts, inspired by Father Mozgus' presence the entire time. Immense strength: In his original human form, Mozgus displays a large amount of strength, being able to kill one of his would-be assassins out of anger with only his scriptures tome. On the way, the group is attacked by villagers out for revenge against Mozgus for slaughtering their loved ones after their village decided to restock their food supply rather than donate to the church. He points to his own wings and declares them a miracle performed by God, and explains that if the refugees are faithful, God will perform another miracle that will save their lives.
