An independent review has criticised Lancashire Police over its handled of the investigation into the disappearance of Missing nicola bulley Bulley. The mother-of-two vanished in January while walking her dog, sparking a huge search and widespread public interest.

Ms Bulley had disappeared on 27 January while walking her dog Willow after dropping her children off at school earlier that morning. Police said two walkers, who used a path well trodden by officers, found her body, which was formally identified the following day. She was found in an area of the river that had already been searched by rescue teams, leading to questions as to how she went undiscovered for more than three weeks. A Lancashire Police diving team subsequently returned to the area on 4 April to continue their investigations. The professor, who did not want to be named, said he believed Ms Bulley was most likely in the same spot throughout the search operation.

On Friday 27 January , Bulley drove from her home to the nearby village of St Michael's on Wyre , where, after dropping her children off at school at approximately GMT , [8] she walked along the River Wyre with her springer spaniel. Bulley was last seen at approximately on a riverside field walking with her dog off its lead. After the report of Bulley's disappearance, Lancashire Constabulary immediately graded Bulley as "high risk" because of "specific vulnerabilities" due to "significant issues with alcohol which were brought on by her ongoing struggles with the menopause ". The search for Bulley was initially focused on tracing a potential witness, a woman in a red coat spotted on CCTV walking a dog near the site of Bulley's disappearance.

Paul Ansell wrote that he had "no words right now, just agony", in a statement he shared with Sky News. Ms Bulley disappeared while walking her dog in St Michael's on Wyre in Lancashire, sparking a major search. On Sunday, Lancashire Police said they "sadly recovered a body" from the water after being called to the River Wyre. In a statement on Monday, the force said the body had not yet been formally identified, and it "was unable to say whether" the deceased was Ms Bulley at this time. Procedures to identify the body are continuing and police are treating the death as "unexplained". The forcesaid Ms Bulley's family "have been informed of developments and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times". In the statement to Sky, Mr Ansell added: "We're all together, we have to be strong.
