In a few words: The best type of engine oil that you can use is the synthetic one. You will find the rest of specifications such as viscosity and quality in the owner's manual of your MGB. It is commonly said that the oil is "heavier" when it is more viscous and "lighter" in the opposite case. Viscosity grades are measured based on SAE standards. We advise you to look for the recommended viscosity in your owner's manual or ask your trusted mechanic. When engines work at low temperatures engine start , the oil should be more fluid in order to reach every part of the engine and ensure immediate lubrication. After a few minutes, the temperature of the engine will rise and, ideally, the oil viscosity should be higher.

Hello all, I have been hearing a lot lately about how inferior engine oil is nowaday because the engine oil manufcturers are taking certain chemical ingredients out of their formulations which are very essential for the older MGB engines. Due to lack of these chemicals, older engines especially overhead cam engines are being broken down due to today's inferior engine oil quality. Has anyone experienced this engine problem due to inferior engine oil made today. I am about to do an engine oil change, and do not know which engine oil is best to use in my old MGB engine. Any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated. Was this post helpful or interesting? Sponsored Links. Re: what type of engine oil should I use 2. Here we go again. If you cannot find the amount of oil your car needs in the manual but you still need to change it, please bear in mind that small and medium-sized cars usually need between 3 and 5 liters of oil, while pickups and large vehicles may need up to 8 liters. Every time you change the motor oil, you must also change the oil filter. This way, you will prevent the new oil from stirring the contaminants captured by the old filter, and this waste will not re-enter the engine. Changing the oil filter is cheaper than changing the motor oil of your MGB once again. If you just want to refill the oil without doing the entire replacement, you should add the oil little by little while reading the marks on the dipstick. When you refill the oil, the oil level will rise and the new oil level will leave a mark on the dipstick. Please, take into account that dipsticks have two marks and the oil level must always be between the limits indicated by these marks found at the end of the stick.
