The Metro books are a perfect way to flesh out the Metro games universe and actually see what the whole series was based on in its original, unadulterated, literary form. It's a straightforward series title-wise, unlike some which can be misleading—I'm looking at you Witcher books —so its easy to know the order, but, if you're looking for extra clarity on exactly how to get started, and what to expect then you're in the right place. The series is written by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky and is set in the Moscow Metro system following a world-devastating nuclear war in the year The books follow the story of Artyom who has known nothing else outside of metro, accounting his experiences of exploring the physical tunnels of the metro, but also the political divisions and factions present in them. This means getting to grips with the way people live and endure in the underground, strange beasts mutated by radiation, and his experiences with a certain supernatural element that have an ambiguous and grey introduction.

Well, I get bogged down at each station where Artyom meets people who always help him a bit on his journey. Prior to the videogame release, the Metro series was a series of Russian novels, primarily written by but not limited to Dmitry Glukhovsky. This was frustrating! While reading along, I even have often contemplated to abandon the book. Each station has developed into its own little nation with its own ideology and way of living. Everything about it promised so much! I love a good dystopia, and Metro delivers a particularly interesting example of the type. I am sure that if you are Russian or if you have visited Moscow, then it must be really interesting to see what happens to the metro stations you know. You should at least give this a try. Hunter sees that Artyom is a bit of a lost soul and takes advantage of that. Locations have only minimal descriptions, likely assuming that you're already familiar with what the Russian subway system looks like--I shouldn't have to look things up on Google Images to understand what an author is talking about. Events are arbitrary, there are too many unnecessary descriptions of metro stations and reader looses himself in all the mentioned tunnels. I actually bought the game, and I am looking forward to exploring it.

The story begins with our 20 year old Artyom who is doing watch duty in the northern tunnel. The plot skips around so much and takes off on random tangents so often that the whole thing at times feels like an exercise in frustration. Even after some pages, it irked me that you still had no idea what sort of person Artyom is, how he looked or developed as a result of his adventures and that also applies to his occasional fellow travellers. When Artyom and his Mother did move into the Metro, they chose a bad station to stay at. It's a testament of word-of-mouth. For shame, right? Ocena: 3,0. Authority control databases VIAF. But I admit it They are rescued by Melnik and a squad of fighters and they escape into Metro-2 , a secret set of tunnels that lead to the missile site. The structure of the quest is aimless and ultimately lacks satisfcatory closure. This is a well-written, poignant and riveting work destined to become a timeless piece of literature that will be studied, admired and critiqued for many years to come.
