Single Rank Memory can be memory with chips on only one side of the memory module stick of memory or chips on both sides of the module as long as the chips are in one rank that is accessed while writing to or reading from the memory. Dual Rank Memory is basically like having two Single Rank chip ranks on one memory module, with only one rank accessible at a time. Quad Rank Memory is, effectively, two Dual Rank Chip sets on one memory module, with only one rank accessible at a time. See Below for Examples. However certain systems have better performance with multi rank memory due to onboard memory controllers.

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Rank is a data block which is 64 bits wide without Error Correction Code ECC created using some, or all of the memory chips on a module. The x8 in them specifies the number of banks in the memory module. Higher the number of banks, the fewer the chips in the memory module, the better the reliability and power consumption. Compatibility is generally not an issue in most cases. But you should go through the motherboard manufacturer's guide of supported RAM modules just to make sure if they are compatible or not.

However certain systems have better performance with multi rank memory due to onboard memory controllers. Compatibility For the most part Dual Rank Memory can be used in conjunction with Single Rank Memory, and in some cases when using a large amount of memory such as 16GB, servers motherboards actually require you to use a mix of Single and Dual Rank Memory. The ranks cannot be accessed simultaneously as they share the same datapath. These terms may cause confusion as they do not necessarily relate to how the DIMMs are logically organized or accessed. In most electronic systems, memory controllers are designed to access the full data bus width of the memory module at the same time. Ranks are accessed through chip selects CS.

The concept of memory rank applies to all memory module form factors, though in general it tends to matter primarily on server platforms, due to the larger amounts of memory they manage. A memory rank is a block or area of data that is created using some, or all, of the memory chips on a module. A rank is a data block that is 64 bits wide. On systems that support Error Correction Code ECC an additional 8 bits are added, which makes the data block 72 bits wide. Depending on how a memory module is engineered, it may have one, two, or four blocks of bit wide data areas or bit wide in the case of ECC modules. This is referred to as single-rank, dual-rank, and quad-rank. Crucial denotes this on the module label as 1Rx4, or 2Rx4, 2Rx8, or similar. The x4 and x8 refer to the number of banks on the memory component or chip. It is this number, not the number of individual memory chips on a PCB, that determines the rank of the finished module.
