Last year, I wrote about Bodacious Space Pirates, a very fun and entertaining show that I still quite like a lot. Now, as comes to a close, I am taking a look at another show, brought to us by the wonderful folks from Sentai Filmworks having since gotten a re-release a few months ago, with an all new English dub, mayo chiki fanservice.

Can fanservice ever be justified in anime or is it a disturbing and unnecessary aspect of the genre? In this occasional series we look at the rights and wrongs of fanservice and other questionable content in anime. A warning: this series will have plenty of spoilers and sometimes NSFW discussions and images. This week, the first episode of the romantic comedy anime Mayo Chiki! Kinjiro goes to the same school as a rich girl, who has her own butler. In the midst of having a little chat together, a big glass jar starts falling from a shelf above Konoe, Kinjiro throws himself on her to save her, her clothes come open and Kinjiro discovers the truth!

This is review number seventy seven. The anime is part of the Summer lineup. A food served with rice. Stupid google search. But if I type Bleach, I get the anime. The anime is thirteen episodes about a guy who has a fear of girls and a girl who dresses up as a guy. Yeah, sounds pretty good. The anime is about Kinjirou Sakamachi, who has gynophobia fear of women. One day, he was going to the bathroom and discovered that the famous butler of Kanade Suzutsuki, Subaru Konoe is actually a girl. Trouble ensued to the point where Subaru was ready to kill Kinjirou for knowing her secret. Kanade intervenes. Kinjirou agreed. Subaru is now sticking to him to make sure he keeps her secret and it unfortunately spreads rumor of the two as a couple. BL love? Or could this two really be meant to be together?

One episode might be a rather nice and sweet slice of life plot but out of nowhere bam fanservice. Due to his mother and sister, who both love professional wrestling, Sakamachi developed a resilient body that could take hard punches, aggressive kicks, and even deadly vehicle bumps, in order to survive their various grappling positions and locks. Well, as far as you can get to an ending in a twelve episode anime. They even devote the last episode to her escapades, which makes that feel less like a final episode then a glorified OVA episode and we all know how those turn out. Yeah, sounds pretty good. The Romance is just half of what the anime is about though. BL love? It was awesome. The anime fleshes them out pretty nicely. Another might be laden with silly but then the brakes hit hard into serious business. I welcome suggestions and feedback and will consider interesting guest posts.
