I tested the new Marmot Col Degree sleeping bag in true expedition conditions over 35 days in the Alaska Range. My trip encompassed a personal climbing trip out to Mt. Huntington in pursuit of some technical objectives at lower elevations. This was as a volunteer for the Denali Rescue Volunteers program. These adventures culminated in the perfect trip to put the Marmot Col Degree sleeping bag through the wringer for over a month straight in an appropriate setting. It provided appropriate warmth with comfort not usually found in this category of sleeping bags. And the substantial roominess and feature set added to livability in expedition settings.

It does not have a waterproof fabric or treated down. So this is a traditional style sleeping bag that belongs in a tent rather than a snow cave or bivy under a tarp during the winter months. With that said, it packs in a solid amount of warmth for being only 2lbs 9oz. This bag also packs quite small, and this is due to the lack of a few features, as well as a thought-out minimalist design from the start. Sleeping in the Marmot Lithium is a great experience.

Marmot is experimenting with adding a secondary zipper to several sleeping bag designs to allow new venting possibilities. The location of the secondary zipper on the side of the Marmot Helium 15 is one of the more perplexing of these experiments, causing us to downgrade an otherwise stellar sleeping bag. The Marmot Helium utilizes 20 ounces of FP down, a pretty sizeable amount for a 3-season backpacking sleeping bag.
