The map is often regarded as a surviving document from the expeditions of Zheng He in addition to accounts written by Zheng's officers, such as Yingya Shenglan by Ma Huan and Xingcha Shenglan by Fei Xin. The map is thought by sinologist J. Duyvendak to have been part of the library of Mao Kun, a collector of military and naval material, who might have acquired it while he was the governor of Fujian. Mills who studied the map, and therefore came to be known as Mao Kun map in Western sources. The introduction to the map in Wubei Zhi indicates that the geographical and navigational details of the charts are based on works from the expeditions of Zheng He , and that Mao had "inserted them for the information of posterity and as a memento of [Zheng He's] military achievement". According to Mills, the map may not have been the work of a single person, rather it was produced in an office with information added and corrected when new information became available after each voyage.

Years later, the map would be destroyed by Joshamee Gibbs , who would memorize every route and destination. Compiled by the four explorers of the Dark Dynasty , this map was presented to the esteemed and great navigator Wu Ling for his journeys to the mysterious gates of the afterlife. The map led its holder to spiritual realms and legends of the land beyond death , particularly towards the Farthest Gate , Davy Jones' Locker , and the Fountain of Youth. There were rings on the Chinese allegory map [4] that were symbolic of lands that can only be accessed through dreams. He held one of the great keys to a true pirate mystery: the navigational charts that showed the way to World's End , [7] serving as the only map that can take anyone to the Farthest Gate. As the guardian and proud protector of this priceless cartographical phenomenon, Sao Feng does not keep the charts at his his bath house where the damp salty air of his waterfront lair could damage its delicate pigmentation, but is closely guarded at a sacred temple owned by his wise and wizened old uncle. They then spawn a number of loot containers called Booty Chests , which drop currency and spawn the boss Fairgraves, Never Dying. Fairgraves will appear a few seconds after opening a Booty Chest.
