Greater Manchester recording area is coterminous with a ceremonial county of the same name. It borders Lancashire to the north and west, Derbyshire and West Yorkshire to the east and Cheshire to the south. Its largest settlement is the city of Manchester itself. The county has an area of 1, km2 square miles and is highly urbanised, with a population of nearly three million people. The city of Manchester with more than half a million people is the largest settlement, followed by Bolton, Sale, Rochdale, Stockport, Salford, and Wigan. Its ten metropolitan boroughs collaborate through Greater Manchester Combined Authority. The county was created from parts of north-west Cheshire, south-east Lancashire, and a small part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

I've just moved up from London to Manchester and I'm keen to know the best areas around for birding. Today I spent a few hours at Clayton Vale - a beautiful stretch of woodland that follows a section of river, which I would have expected to be teeming with life but was fairly disappointing. Maybe it's the wrong time of year? Or the wrong time of day I was there from 12 til 2 on a blisteringly hot day But are any of them particularly good for birds?

They run several surveys to monitor birds in the British Isles, in which volunteers can take part. The trust also heads up National Nest Box Week — a campaign to provide more homes for nesting birds.
