Mali Bakes is a retro inspired bespoke cake studio. Our ethos is all about fun designs and flavours. We want to create cakes that are truly beautiful, delicious, and unique inside and out. Our studio is also open every Saturday for sliced cakes, so pop in and say hi! Mali is a Thai word meaning Jasmine and is also a very traditional name for girls. I have always gravitated towards this word since I was a little kid. There is something quite blissful and warm about it which is essentially the whole idea behind Mali Bakes. A beautiful cake inside and out that brings you right back to those sweet childhood memories. My love of baking is an extension of my general love of food. It was my grandfather who introduced me to the wonder of the kitchen. He was a keen cook and loved sharing his delicious creations with everyone. For the most part of my chef career, I worked in hot kitchens.

ICYMI, last week we revealed our new brand identity that puts Linktree creators front and center, where they belong! We specialize in bespoke cakes for celebrations like birthday parties, weddings, and everything in between and surrounding. Mali Bakes began as a lockdown project. Linktree is intuitive, and has given us a way to guide our customers through our journey and story — and make them a part of it. Having the contact form available has been invaluable for us. Giving the customer a direct line to us, without having to open their own email, has made the entire experience much more streamlined and enjoyable for us, and our customers. Our retro cakes are fun and colorful, and bring with them a sense of nostalgia, and playfulness!

Mali Bakes cakes are cheerfully retro, vividly coloured and intriguingly flavoured. Chimkire was working as a pastry chef when the pandemic hit. But with the hospitality industry thrust into hibernation, she decided to look for a silver or candy-coloured lining in all that newfound free time. It popped off. A ton of time and effort went into developing the cake aesthetic. The cake flavours were just as carefully considered.

When pastry chef Patti Chimkire lost most of her work in due to the Melbourne lockdowns, she decided to make the most of her free time and explore a new source of income baking cookies and cakes from her small share house — and boy, are we glad she did! Soon after she launched Mali Bakes , Patti was producing countless sweet treats each week and experimenting with cake colours and flavours. Her delicious retro-inspired creations — that look almost too good to eat — have been met with overwhelming demand, and now she has her own adorable Thornbury store.
