MacGyver is an American adventure television series, produced in Canada, about a laid-back, extremely resourceful secret agent, played by Richard Dean Anderson. Of the one-hour episodes, three had two parts. Additionally, two made-for-TV movies were produced in Angus MacGyver 's main asset is his practical application of scientific knowledge and inventive use of common items—along with his ever-present Swiss Army knife and duct tape and the usual coincidence of being locked up in a room full of useful materials. The clever solutions MacGyver implemented to seemingly intractable problems—often in life-or-death situations requiring him to improvise complex devices in a matter of minutes—were a major attraction of the show, which was praised for generating interest in engineering as well as providing entertaining storylines.

Angus MacGyver is a highly resourceful intelligent, optimistic action hero who prefers non-violent conflict resolution wherever possible. He refuses to carry or use a gun due to a childhood accident with a revolver that resulted in the death of a friend. This was shown in episode two of Season 4 Blood Brothers when MacGyver goes back to his home town and meets two childhood friends and in flashbacks, we see the accidental death of friend Jesse by a bullet from a falling gun. This episode was before his dislike of firearms was established. The character is portrayed as an outspoken advocate of gun control. Even in cases where his improvised devices are used to attack hostile opponents, he is always doing so in self-defense and, if possible, subduing or disabling rather than killing. He is often suspicious of militaristic attitudes within the government; he sees his Phoenix Foundation employer as an alternative to the more conventional and violent means of law enforcement. His heritage explains why he speaks with a Minnesota accent. MacGyver lived his childhood in Mission City. Like Anderson, MacGyver was an avid hockey player as a child, and competed in his local hockey league, continuing to play the game as an adult. His character earned a degree in physics from the fictitious Western Tech where in a mustachioed MacGyver had studied under Julian Ryman , a man who also had an ability to fix everything with everyday objects and it seems MacGyver learned his talent from him. This was revealed in the episode " Hell Week " where MacGyver returns to his college and ends up helping Ryman's son, David. MacGyver's interests include ice hockey, racecar driving, chemistry, and baccarat. In the episode Countdown , it is mentioned MacGyver worked in bomb disposal, defusing bombs during the Vietnam War. However, his exact status, and how long he was there, is never specifically established.

April 1, Recurring villain Murdoc, in "Strictly Business", is meeting macgyver 1985 his superiors at HITmacgyver 1985, and has to pass through a metal detector first, which reveals that he's carrying multiple weapons on his person that he has to remove.

The first season of the American television series MacGyver , consisting of 22 episodes, began on September 29, , and ended on May 7, , and aired on the ABC network. The region 1 DVD was released on January 25, In this season, the show introduces MacGyver , described as "an action hero who practiced non-violent methods and fought with his mind instead of his hands or weapons. On top of a vertical rock face encampment, MacGyver rescues a captured Air Force pilot and reacquires a component from a top secret missile in Central Asia from the armed captors. Although MacGyver doesn't believe in using guns, he carries one a Valmet rifle disguised as an AKM in order to appear like one of the guards and later rigs it to fire off as a distraction in the opening gambit of the pilot episode. Extremely out-of-character for later MacGyver episodes he also shoots twice at the guards pursuing them, then hands the weapon over to the Air Force pilot he is rescuing while he prepares their escape. After coming home, he is called in to rescue a group of scientists trapped in an underground New Mexico laboratory after a major explosion.
