Convicted killer Luka Magnotta is taking the federal government to court to compel his transfer out of a maximum-security prison in Quebec to a medium-security facility. Magnotta is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in the killing of Chinese student Jun Lin in Montreal. The grisly killing, with acts of necrophilia and cannibalism recorded on video and posted online, made international headlines. A package containing a foot was received at the Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa. The case triggered a global manhunt for Magnotta, who was eventually arrested in an internet cafe in Berlin, Germany in June At trial, he admitted to the killing but claimed he was not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. Magnotta, now age 39, was convicted in December and sentenced to life with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. Canadians will soon have to adjust their clocks an hour ahead as we draw closer to the start of spring.

Jun, a year-old student studying at Concordia University at the time, was stabbed multiple times in the chest, before his body was dismembered. A janitor later discovered Lin Jun's decomposing torso in a rubbish bin close to the apartment block where he was killed, and notified police. In the video, Luka can be seen straddling Lin Jun, who was tied to the bed post in Magnotta's bedroom. Luka then proceeds to stab Lin Jun in the chest with what appears to be an ice pick; it was later revealed to be a screw driver that had been modified to look like an ice pick. After stabbing Lin's chest, Luka dismembers his body and also feeds flesh to a dog, before killing the puppy. As well as dumping Lin Jun's torso in the rubbish, Luka sent the victim's left foot to the Conservative Party of Canada, and then his right hand to the Liberal Party.
