I would assume that "copy back" means that the decompressed frames are copied back to main memory after they have been decompressed by the graphic card's hardware decoder.

DXVA implementations come in two variants: native and copy-back. Almost all implementations are of the native type. The LAV video decoder that is included in the pack offers both variants. With the native type, the decoded video stays in GPU memory until it has been displayed. This brings some limitations with regard to playback. The DXVA decoder must be connected directly to the video renderer. There can be no processing filter in between. The video renderer must also support DXVA, which give you a bit less freedom of choice in renderers. The reason for keeping the decoded video inside GPU memory is efficiency. They are too slow for smooth playback. They can only copy data fast in the other direction. Such implementations don't have the limitations mentioned above and act similar to a normal software decoder. Otherwise it will give stuttering video playback.

Our decoding and rendering benchmarks consists of standardized test clips varying codecs, resolutions and frame rates being played back through MPC-HC. The former provides hints on whether frame drops could occur, while the latter is an indicator of the efficiency of the platform for the most common HTPC task - video playback. The Enhanced Video Renderer is the default renderer made available by Windows 8. It is a lean renderer in terms of usage of system resources since most of the aspects are offloaded to the GPU drivers directly. Deinterlacing and other post processing aspects were left at the default settings in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and these are applicable when EVR is chosen as the renderer. Power consumption shows a tremendous decrease across all streams. In general, using the QuickSync decoder results in a higher power consumption because the decoded frames are copied back to the DRAM before being sent to the renderer.

The graph building has never used GPU information before, so this change does require creating a Direct3d device, asking it a few questions, and releasing it. Recently Updated. Jump to Latest Follow. If you are seeing dropped and repeated frames, it sounds like your madVR settings are too demanding for the card. This comes at a small cost of quality chroma is slightly blurred, iirc , but should improve performance. I don't want upscale or other tweaks for a 4k movie. There can be no processing filter in between. No it won't be able to get the most out of madVR. I dont want that. The critical viewing one is with gamma 2. Decoding it to RGB then should look like this:. JeffR1 said:.

On the other hand, the setting does have an option to enable it "if the display refresh rate is an exact multiple of the movie frame rate" which would seem to indicate that Madshi is still trying to do some kind of intentional smoothing not targeted at reducing judder. At what point does investing in the cpu have diminishing returns? Haven't a clue? I am using W Then everyone will be using 10 bit video in the consumer space.
