I'm tired of the blame. That mirror was a prison and fusion was the same!

Throughout Steven Universe , Lapis transformed from a trauma survivor trapped on Earth who wanted nothing more than to escape and return to Homeworld, to a Gem on the run confused about her place in the universe and scared of the Diamond Authority, to a full-fledged Crystal Gem willing to do whatever it takes to stand up for her home and for the people she believes in. It's one of the best examples of character development we get throughout a series that's absolutely chock-full of it. Through all that development, there's bound to be a handful of things that even dedicated fans might have missed about her character. Today, we'll be taking a look at ten things that even die-hard fans might not have known about Lapis Lazuli. Lapis is a survivor of some pretty extreme trauma, having been poofed and then mistaken for a Crystal Gem and imprisoned , alone, for thousands of years- all due to a rebellion that she'd been mixed up in, not having wanted anything to do with it. Ever since Steven freed her, she's been slowly working on different ways to cope with her new life and with her own past, both her imprisonment and the horrible things she did prior.

Lapis Lazulis are Gems who have hydrokinetic abilities and were formerly used to terraform planets for colonies. All known Lapis Lazulis have been voiced by Jennifer Paz. Lapis Lazulis were very valuable to the Gem Empire because of their powerful hydrokinesis, and also were among the common elite on Homeworld. They are primarily used for terraforming potential colonies with their hydrokinesis, as mentioned by Yellow Diamond. Lapis Lazulis are terraformers who reshape alien planets to be more suitable for Gem production and colonization. From what has been shown, Lapis Lazulis are incredibly powerful Gems, being capable of moving entire bodies of water with such force that it easily cuts through thick layers of rock. It is likely that this is how the canyons for Kindergartens are created, and how a planet's landmasses are reshaped by Homeworld during colonization. Lapis Lazulis are slightly shorter than Pearls , and are very humanoid in appearance, with their blue colored skin and gem being the only indication that they are extraterrestrial. Homeworld Lapis Lazulis are barefooted, and wear a cropped sleeveless top with a long skirt that goes just below their knees. The diamond insignia is either placed on the collar in a similar way to the most common Homeworld uniform, or split in half over the front of the top and skirt.

Broken Bird : She entered the show injured, imprisoned, desperate for freedom and wanting nothing more than to go home.

Lapis Lazuli is one of the most popular characters of the critically acclaimed TV show Steven Universe. And for good reason. She is a very complex character whose origins are still shrouded in mystery. For some of us including myself, we can relate to Lapis very much. There is more to life than being stuck in the past, which the show again shows how it is not always that easy for some people. Yet as with most popular large fandoms, there is always going to be some rather, well, lousy and often unconstructive criticism among fans. Sometimes it just becomes downright ugly.

I'm tired of the blame. That mirror was a prison and fusion was the same! During her alignment with the Gem Homeworld , she was caught in the crossfire of The Rebellion and got poofed by Bismuth. Homeworld mistook her for one of the Crystal Gems and imprisoned her within a magical mirror with the intention of interrogating her about her supposed comrade's whereabouts. After being abandoned by the Homeworld Gems fleeing the Corrupting Light , Lapis would remain in the mirror for thousands of years until she eventually convinced Steven to free her. Once Lapis returned to Homeworld, she was forced back to Earth by Peridot and Jasper , the latter of whom she fused with into Malachite in order to protect Steven.

Hopeless Boss Fight : The Crystal Gems' first attempt to fight her turns out to be futile when she has literally all the oceans of the planet at her disposal. She even expresses remorse for her past as a terraformer and how she used to destroy planets and their inhabitants and is making up for it now after seeing how precious life is. Her powers allow her to repeatedly restrain Blue Diamond while resisting her Emotion Bomb , giving the others multiple chances to strike her unabated. It is very likely that this is the Crystal Gem Lapis, as the appearance is almost identical and she would have been on Earth at this time, but it has yet to be confirmed. As revealed in " Cry for Help ", Lapis was initially summoned to be Peridot's informant during her invasion of Earth and was held a prisoner in her spaceship. She then takes control of their combined form Malachite and drags them both into the ocean. She takes control of Malachite after fusing with Jasper, dragging the two of them to the bottom of the ocean and even preventing Jasper from ending the fusion. While she doesn't outright join the Crystal Gems, they're at least on good terms, and she doesn't have any qualms about being a part of the Crystal Temps. Lapis: I want to! Season 2. She rejects Steven's multiple offers for help before scaring him as Malachite. Peridot is also more open to new experiences and people once she Took a Level in Kindness while Lapis is more closed to new experiences and people.

Secretly Selfish : Her Heroic Sacrifice of forcing a fusion with Jasper turns out to be mainly for her own wants. Lapis isn't evil or antagonistic, however, she did admit to enjoying torturing Jasper in their fusion as Malachite, but harbors some remorse over it. Despite her large amount of progress made in bettering herself, Lapis still doubts if she's made any progress at all, evident by her angry outburst at two other Lapis Lazulis , who mocked her relentlessly for trying to show them a new peaceful way of life and the subsequent shame Lapis showed for giving into her anger. Water was the tomb I lived in for those months. There has been a lot of toxic and hypocritical moments from a fandom whose show is all about love, peace and healthy relationships bare in mind that have sprouted about. She's the most human-looking Gem, complete with subtle curves, making her the most attractive Gem to many, accentuating her outfits' designs, and her exposed back is also given more detail than the other Gems'. They are primarily used for terraforming potential colonies with their hydrokinesis, as mentioned by Yellow Diamond. Not So Above It All : Keep in mind that, before being released from the mirror, she "got a lot of mileage" out of helping Steven make fart jokes at Mayor Dewey. In "Reunited" when Blue Diamond uses her powers to render everyone at the wedding essentially useless, Lapis appears and is shown to not be affected by them at all. However, after un-fusing with Jasper, her attitude changes a bit.
