A specialist on the Kray twins has penned a book on the gangster's stories which are often left untold. Jacky Hyams' new book - Vicious, Elegant Bastards - is on the infamous brothers who ran criminal activities from their mum's terraced cottage in the East End's Vallance Road in the s and 60s. It was astonishing reading how two working class boys from the East End rose through the ranks to become two of the most powerful men in Britain. This was a great outlet for their boundless energy. Whilst this would have blown the lid off many things it would not have saved them and they were within a hairs breadth of achieving another of their main goals. One of the reasons for their great success was the fact that they were identical twins. The book was described as "the bible of the butcheoisie. Even the Krays, without moral complicity and when he is not getting angry and spouting cod-psychology , come across as complex persons rather than mere monsters. They grew up protecting one another. What's really missing in anything I've ever read about the Krays, and is only briefly mentioned in this book, is the nature of their relationship as twins and how it could be argued although Reggie would never have allowed it that it was Ronnie's psychopathy that drove them to what they did, and their twin link that drove Reggie when failing to appease Ronnie, to get swept up in it all? The twins were always there for one another and even throughout their lives when one or the other left, it wouldn't be long before he came back. He writes well. I for one intend to see it.
