Niklaus Mikaelson is the original vampire-werewolf hybrid. He is the biological son of Ansel Aumont and Esther Mikaelson , being born though their affair with one another, and is the stepson of Esther's husband, Mikael Agnarsson. He is the father of Hope Mikaelson. He is the maternal younger half-brother of Freya , Finn , and Elijah Mikaelson ; the maternal older half-brother of Kol , Rebekah , and Henrik Mikaelson ; and the paternal older half-brother of Lily Anseldottir. He is also both the adoptive father and brother-in-law to Marcel Gerard.

Rose warns Stefan about the Original Vampires which led to Elena Gilbert believing Klaus was the oldest vampire in history. Elijah later mentions that Klaus is a recluse and trusts very few people, usually only in his inner circle. For over a thousand years, Klaus had been trying to break a curse placed on him. His goal was to liberate his werewolf side so he could sire his own super species of werewolf-vampire hybrids. In , he finally got the chance to break his curse when he met Katerina Petrova , the final piece necessary to break the curse. However, Katerina managed to foil his plan to use her in the sacrifice by turning into a vampire. During his search for a way to break the curse, Klaus hunted down his family and neutralized them. He also hunted Katerina, who had escaped him and stolen his moonstone. However, it should also be noted that he was also on the run from his step-father, Mikael, as Klaus had an abusive childhood. Besides his family, during the 's, Klaus formed a strong bond and brotherly relationship with Stefan.

After the spell is interrupted thanks to the Salvatores, Esther disappears with Finn. He waits in front of the school-where Alaric has Caroline and Elena-with Stefan and the two talk, Klaus trying to drive a wedge between the brothers again. Surprised to hear of their father's death, Elijah asks why their family remains in the coffins. The Mikaelsons attempt to help Hope reconnect with her humanity, eventually succeeding.

In order to defeat it, Klaus, Rebekah, Kol and a resurrected Elijah each take a piece of the Hollow's soul into themselves and go their separate ways for all time. She comes to see Esther, talks to her, and shares wine as they agree on the spell. Marcel knows he is jealous and snarls that it is his town, that he is the king. As Marcel takes Klaus prisoner, Hayley takes the other Mikaelsons and goes into hiding until she can find a way to save them. In the days following the incident, Rebekah was particularly kind to him, which Klaus later realized meant that she had been the one to take them. Davina manages to avoid Josh's surveillance and goes to Kol's secret lair. Marcel looked touched by his words. The group immediately scolded you for letting Klaus into your house. In a disc shop, she meets Kaleb and starts to bond with him, unaware that he's Kol Mikaelson.
