Expansion and the acquisition of new businesses resulted in Kellaway using communication services from multiple suppliers, with varying levels of cost, service and support. Kellaway Building Supplies are the largest independent builders merchant in Bristol, with 10 branches serving Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Having asked previous suppliers to provide cost centre breakdowns without success, Systems Manager Barry Edbrooke was tasked with addressing this issue and improving internal communications. MPS carried out a detailed audit of all phone systems, telephone lines, calls and internet access circuits and were able to identify opportunities to eliminate waste and duplication, thus delivering cost savings. We were happy with the pricing and service and agreed to put all applicable business with MPS. They provide us with an easy to understand cost centre breakdown by branch, which is further analysed by service type. Our previous bills from BT were a nightmare, not itemised and difficult to understand. Our purchase ledger team is much happier with a single bill from MPS rather than bills from multiple suppliers and we have reduced our costs. Some of our existing suppliers offered us preferential rates to remain with them but they were still more expensive than MPS. They provided us with advice about our existing contracts, commissioned new lines and broadband circuits before switching any existing services off and commissioned services out of hours where necessary. Their engineers are easy to get hold of and they manage problems from start to finish. They deal with third party network providers on our behalf, making my job much easier.

I expected to like Re-educated , the new memoir by Lucy Kellaway, who at the age of 57 and to the bafflement of friends and colleagues, resigned from her cushy perch as a columnist for the Financial Times to retrain as a teacher. To my amazement, I found myself swallowing hard halfway through the story and remained on the brink of tears for the entire final third. We meet Kellaway in , in her early 50s, just as her marriage is deteriorating, her ageing father is fading, and after decades as a journalist at the FT , she is facing burnout and mid-career malaise. We learn that, in the 70s, her late mother was an inspirational English teacher in north London, and that she is obsessed with property. Five years later, she has quit her job, ended her marriage and moved from the large, period property in Highbury where she and her husband raised their four children, to live alone in a modern house in Hackney. It is from here she begins a new life as a teacher. As Kellaway herself points out, books about ageing tend to be terrible; either too maudlin, or too evasive and jolly. In fact, I found the book a great deal more honest than a lot of ostensibly more literary memoirs. It is rare, in any story, to find a narrator who can confront her own limitations without sneakily presenting them as adorable virtues.
