Wielding oversized scissors, Johnson Director Ellen Ochoa officially cut the ribbon in the entryway, ushering in the next chapter of biomedical research in support of human space exploration. This facility boasts a flexible, reconfigurable layout to better acclimate to changing mission needs and requirements. The plethora of meeting spaces adjacent to laboratories allows researchers to optimize utilization, reduce silos and interact more in person. It is here where our extraordinary scientists will further our understanding of space physiology, behavioral health and space vehicle environments in support of astronaut health, safety and performance. Building 21 has a support beam installed in the high-bay ceiling that was signed by the laboratory and administrative workers who will soon call it home. The facility is expected to garner a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver rating—just another example of the center leading the way in sustainable architecture that is kinder to planet Earth.

How do you make , square feet of concrete, rebar and laboratories green? Created by the U. USGBC, through LEED, provides a construction checklist, with points awarded in various categories such as energy and water efficiency, incorporating healthy materials, recycling construction waste and implementing sustainable practices. Depending on how many aspects are included, buildings are rated as certified, silver, gold or platinum. Upon completion, the building should function with an estimated 30 percent reduction in energy usage and water usage, recycle more than 75 percent of the construction waste, use locally sourced and recycled-content materials and encourage alternative transportation. These metrics, especially in energy and water conservation, have become industry standards over the past few years as the demand for green buildings continues to grow. Others are becoming routine, like the inclusion of 24 bicycle parking spaces to promote alternative transportation. The HHP facility will house the biomedical, environmental science, human performance and clinical laboratories. Why build green? It pays big dividends over the long term. LEED-certified buildings cost less to operate, potentially reducing energy and water bills by more than 40 percent. Green buildings are healthier for the occupants because they emphasize the use of benign materials in adhesives, floor coverings, furniture and cleaning products.

The facility provides critical ongoing program support, including ground-based and in-flight medical operations. The applied research identifies, characterizes, and mitigates the risks to human health and performance in space to enable successful space exploration. There are two mixed lab and office levels and a mechanical penthouse with a combined area of approximately , SF. The top level also houses the national archive sample repository freezer storage and a two-story office block that consists primarily of open workspace architecture. The foundation consists of a concrete slab supported on auger cast piles, and the superstructure is part pan slab and structural steel with slab on metal deck. Interiors are standard laboratory quality finishes with some terrazzo, with the laboratory casework being included in this package.
The building efficiently consolidates and replaces multiple aging and obsolete facilities at JSC into an integrated design to enhance collaboration and innovation among scientists, clinicians and engineers. Houston , TX United States. The long windowless outside wall of the high-bay features a pattern of contrasting glossy and flat black stone designed to mimic a DNA sequence. The exterior landscape design features evoke the celestial geometry of the solar system and the dynamic movement of the planets and moons orbiting around the sun. The south wing houses two levels of bioanalytical laboratories, while the north wing houses flexible high-bay laboratories for human performance evaluations. A two-story structure with administrative and collaborative spaces featuring controlled natural daylight connects the two wings. Centralized corridors for utility operations and functions do not detract from valuable laboratory spaces to assure that scientific and mission operations protocols are not compromised.
